Job description

Ministerial and Communications

The Ministerial and Communications Group sits at the heart of the Treasury. If you are interested in the inner workings of the Government, meeting Ministers, Senior Officials and liaising with the Press then this could be the place for you! We are a friendly and inclusive Group working on some of the most exciting issues of the day, bringing together work from across the rest of the department and engaging closely with partners across Whitehall and beyond.

We provide support to Ministers, through Ministerial offices. We act as Treasury's external face, through the Press Office and Communications team. We are responsible for managing the department, through our support for the Permanent Secretary, the Second Permanent Secretaries, the Treasury Board, and the Executive Management Board (EMB), and our ownership of Treasury governance structures. The Group is led by the Permanent Secretary.

The Communications Team is responsible for all communications conducted by HM Treasury and its Ministers. It works closely with policy teams, Ministers and special advisors to communicate the full range of the Treasury’s work, through traditional and digital channels.

The team is high-performing, supportive and fun. We work highly collaboratively across the different aspects of communications which includes press, digital, insight & strategy, events and visits and internal comms.

The Digital team is made up of social media, publishing, design, animation, photographic and video specialists and works with communication colleagues to produce compelling and engaging content for a range of channels.

About the job

This role will put you at the centre of the Treasury’s communications team as we find innovative ways to explain our work. We are looking for 2 confident, talented Videographers to help us reach new audiences and make sure our policies and messages are seen and clearly understood. We’re constantly trying to improve the content we put out and experiment with new formats, styles and channels.

The ideal candidate will want to work in a fast-paced, high-profile environment, and will have experience in creating high quality video and animated content for digital audiences. They will have a creative eye, be a skilled editor, and be comfortable shooting by themselves or as part of a team.

We are looking for someone who is innovative, full of creative ideas about how to make use of the latest tech and who can build strong relationships and project-manage digital projects from initial brief through to delivery.

Key Accountabilities for this role include:

  1. Work with colleagues across the communications team to plan video and animation content as part of our wider comms plans.
  2. Film ministerial and departmental events, visits and announcements.
  3. Edit video content for a range of channels, adding animated elements where appropriate.
  4. Run external livesteams for the department, working with our Social Media Manager on live events.
  5. Work closely with the Social Media Manager, press officers and policy officials to ensure that products are concise, tailored for their audience and meet editorial standards. The work also includes making best use of HM Treasury social media channels to communicate policies and announcements in a way is clear, honest and engaging.

Whilst the role can be based in either our London or Darlington office, there is a requirement for travel in the role which will predominantly be centred around London, so any Darlington based applicants should be prepared for frequent travel to London.

What we are looking for;

  1. Experience of video production, alongside creating products for social channels using a range of software.

We are looking for someone who possesses creative flair, a keen eye for composition and the skill to translate that to screen-based media. You will have an ability in and passion for video – from scripting, storyboarding, producing, camera work and editing and audio-mixing. An understanding of design principles, including conceptualisation, layout, composition and typography, is preferred. You will use both Mac and PC platforms in the role, so some knowledge of both is preferable. Good knowledge and experience of Adobe Creative Suite products including Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects, is essential. You will create content across HM Treasury’s social channels so professional experience in creating and delivering successful content across a range of platforms is essential.

  1. Knowledge of social media channels and how government is increasingly using them to communicate

We are looking for someone who understands how digital channels can be used as part of successful communications delivery. Ideally, you will have an interest in emerging design and digital content trends and technologies. The ability to learn fast and enthusiasm to quickly build upon existing skills is also desirable.

  1. Proven ability to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders

You will have strong relationship-building skills, be comfortable dealing with people at all levels of the organisation, and feel confident about offering communications advice and guidance. The ability to respond quickly, flexibly, creatively and to use initiative, whilst working calmly under pressure, is also desirable.
