Selection process details

This vacancy is using Success Profiles (opens in a new window), and will assess your Behaviours, Strengths and Experience.

How to Apply , Civil Service Careers (civil-service-careers.gov.uk) provides advice and tips on applying for roles in the Civil Service

All prospective applicants should fully consider the candidate pack before applying.

To apply for this post, you will need to complete the online application process outlined below:

Personal Statement
A supporting statement (no longer than
1250 words) explaining how you consider your personal skills, qualities and experience provide evidence of your suitability for the role, with particular reference to the key criteria. In the event of a large number of applications we will use a Lead Key Criteria to initially assess your application at the sift stage. Candidates who pass the initial sift may be progressed to a full sift, or progressed straight to assessment/interview.

When completing your personal statement, please read and understand the key criteria, as this is what your written evidence will assessed against.

Your layout is entirely your preference; you may choose narrative, bullets, etc. You may choose to address each criteria separately, however, one narrative example may cover and evidence several key criteria. You may not be able to meet all the key criteria, but please ensure you evidence: the key personal requirements and what have you done that relates to the requirements. You don’t have to explain the whole process, just what you have done and the skills and experience you have used. Share with us what makes you suited to this role and why, what you can do and the skills you have that are transferable to the key requirements, and the life experience or passion you have that are linked to this role.

The Civil Service values honesty and integrity and expects all candidates to abide by these principles. Please ensure that all examples provided in your application are taken directly from your own experience and that you describe the examples in your own words. Applications will be screened and if evidence of plagiarism or copying examples/answers from other sources is found, your application will be withdrawn. Internal DWP candidates may also face disciplinary action.

Interview
This will consist of a face to face, blended interview where we will assess you using Behavioural and Strength based questions on the four Behaviours listed.

A blended interview aims to be more of a conversation at interview, offering a more inclusive approach. The Behaviour and Strength based questioning explores what the candidate can and has done, but also their potential.

The interview will last approximately 45 to 50 minutes. Further details regarding the interview arrangements will be included in the invite to interview.

The Behaviour questions will be sent to candidates 5 working days in advance of their interview to the email address used in their application. Candidates are advised to check their inbox and spam/junk folders regularly once their interview has been booked.

If the questions and presentation topic have not been received prior to your interview, please contact the vacancy holder westmidlandsgroup.westmidlandsrecruitmentteam@DWP.GOV.UK

An example of a Behavioural question would be;
Tell me about a time you have set about improving customer service, giving a sense of pace and criticality of success? How did you ensure this activity achieved its objectives whilst keeping costs under control? What tools and techniques did you use?

It may help to use one or more examples of a piece of work you have completed or a situation you have been in, and use the WHO or STAR model to explain:

What the task/ work was, How you approached the task/work/situation and what the Outcomes were, what did you achieve? Or What was the Situation? What were the Tasks? What Action did you take? What were the Results of your actions?

It is difficult to prepare for strength type questions. However, you can think through your answers, focus on your achievements and aspects you enjoy and decide how these can be applied in the organisation and role.
While strengths questions are shorter and we do not expect a full STAR response, the panel is interested in your first reaction to the question and information or reasoning to support this.

Sift Dates: 9 to 17 April 2024

Interview Dates: 30 April to 1 May 2024

Due to time constraints interviews will only be undertaken on the above date unless advised otherwise.

  • If you are offered a role in a location you have expressed a preference for, and you decline the offer or are unable to take up post within a reasonable timeframe you will be withdrawn from the campaign and removed from the reserve list, other than in exceptional circumstances*.
