Job description

The UK Financial Intelligence Unit (UKFIU) has national responsibility for receiving, analysing and disseminating intelligence submitted through the Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) regime, to share with law enforcement agencies at home and internationally. The UKFIU sits at the heart of the regime, providing the gateway to reporters and a repository of data to inform law enforcement. 

The UKFIU's work with SARs plays a critical role in alerting law enforcement to potential instances of money laundering and terrorist financing. 

SARs are a vital source of intelligence, not only on economic crime but on a wide range of criminal activity. They are instrumental in, and have helped with, identifying fraud victims, sex offenders, murder suspects, missing persons, people traffickers, fugitives and terrorist financing.     

The UKFIU sits within the National Crime Agency’s National Economic Crime Centre (NECC).

The UKFIU is adapting and promoting its online presence, enhancing its digital global reach to SARs reporters, supervisors/regulators/trade bodies, law enforcement end users, international partners and government partners etc.

It is an exciting time to join the Digital Media and Publications team as we set the agenda for the UKFIU’s communications strategy, managing, enhancing and building the UKFIU’s international reputation, and focusing on wider social media engagement, creating exciting new audio and visual communication products, and developing and designing new UKFIU guidance products aimed at engaging with all stakeholders. 

You will be leading a small team of officers and whilst knowledge of the SARs Regime is desirable, it is not essential. We will invest in you and train you so that you have the fundamental knowledge required to perform in this role.

What is essential, is your ability to adapt, be proactive and work at pace. We receive over 900,000 SARs and volumes continue to rise so the need for a dedicated communications function which we can use to influence changes in reporter behaviour and to assist law enforcement in their exploitation of the data in SARs is essential.

Person specification

The Communications Manager role within the Digital Media and Publications (DMP) team is both varied and fast-paced, comprising personal, day-to-day managerial responsibilities and engagement forward planning based on strategic thinking and data analysis. The ability to see the bigger picture is important as there are often a number of moving parts in play at any one time. 

Communication is required across a range of grades, including directorate level, and with the wide variety of stakeholders that DMP works across. The Communications Manager is responsible, among other duties, for the ideation and implementation of campaigns across a range of communications channels, growth of UKFIU’s social media presence, reporting, and maintenance of policies and processes.

Main responsibilities will be:

  • Coordinating the UKFIU’s internal and external communications output.  Managing and enhancing the UKFIU’s social media presence and building it on other digital platforms.
  • Planning, evaluating and disseminating digital content to reach specific audiences.
  • Researching, creating and promoting UKFIU video/audio materials (films, podcasts, webinars  etc.) across various platforms catering for varied audiences.
  • Writing, designing and producing various targeted communications pieces for distribution.
  • Maintaining and building the UKFIU’s own specific brand and look.
  • As required, liaison with key UKFIU domestic and international partners e.g. reporters, law enforcement agencies, regulators, supervisors, international financial intelligence units.
  • As required, attendance at meetings where UKFIU communications input is sought.
  • Working as part of a team alongside communications and engagement officers.
  • Proofreading and editing to produce accurate and high-quality work.
  • Producing the UKFIU annual report and other guidance documents.

Additional Information 

  • The NCA is a 24/7 organisation, and working patterns must support business requirements. Some roles may require you to respond at short notice or outside of core hours.
