About the job

Job summary

The National Archives collects and secures the Government record both current and future, preserving it for the Nation and making it accessible. Our collection spans almost 1000 years and is one of the largest in the world, containing over 11 million historical records from medieval parchment to modern papers, digital files, datasets, websites, tweets, and computer code.

As a Transfer Adviser, you’ll make government records publicly available, at the right time and in the right way and ensure that our collection continues to grow, making government records from the recent past available and accessible to our diverse audience.

Working closely with Government, you’ll enable organisations like the Cabinet Office, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Ministry of Defence to transfer their records to The National Archives in line with their responsibilities under the Public Records Act and ensure that they are findable and accessible through our online catalogue, Discovery, and that the physical records themselves are preserved in perpetuity.

About you:

We are looking for individuals who are highly committed to delivering a professional service within the public sector and who are looking for a fast pace, high intensity work environment. This work requires exceptional attention to detail, resilience and a high degree of interpersonal skills in working with departmental contacts. This ensures that the integrity of records are maintained and managed during the transfer process and that statutory transfer responsibilities are met in accordance with the Public Record Act 1958 and the twenty-year rule.

This is a full time post. However, requests for part-time working, flexible working and job share will be considered, taking into account at all times the operational needs of the Department. This role is principally based onsite.

The Civil Service is committed to attract, retain and invest in talent wherever it is found. To learn more please see the Civil Service People Plan and the Civil Service D&I Strategy.
