Job summary

The Bilateral Trade Relations directorate is responsible for developing and maintaining bilateral trade relationships with partners around the world. We ensure that businesses can operate effectively in overseas markets through effective use of our trade agreements and tackling barriers to trade to help exporters and benefit the UK economy.

You will work in the Pacific Americas team which has responsibility for five UK trade agreements in the region; with Mexico, Central America, Cariforum, Andean Countries (Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador) and Chile. The post-holder will be responsible for the effective and creative implementation of one or more of these agreements.

This is a stretching role which offers the opportunity to engage with a range of partners in the region and across Whitehall. You will support the Secretary of State’s number one international priority of reducing market access barriers across the globe to boost trade and increase UK exports.

It will test your ability to manage multiple projects and build effective delivery-focused relationships at home and abroad.

It will also help you develop an in-depth understanding of the global trade environment including working with businesses, UK posts abroad and multi-lateral organisations such as the WTO.

Job description

- Effective implementation of free trade agreements between UK and Latin American partners through.

- Working with regional colleagues and Whitehall partners to identify and resolve barriers to market in the region.

- Working with business to ensure that their interests are reflected through delivery of agreements and our market access work.

- Building effective relationships with partner ministries in Latin American countries to co-ordinate planning and address any non-compliance issues.

Skills and Experience

Essential criteria

- Ability to work with a diverse range of people across disciplines, departments and locations (international experience helpful but not essential).

- Experience in briefing senior officials and ministers.

- Able to analyse complex issues, including understanding of wider political context of role and implications of advice.

Desirable criteria

- Understanding of trade and investment policy is not essential but would be helpful.

- Experience of managing projects and using and maintaining planning tools would be useful.

Personal Attributes & Skills

This job would suit a candidate who is looking for a stretching role in trade policy and international relations.

You will bring:

- The ability to build effective relations within and outside the civil service, including with other policy officials, analysts, partner governments, business, and UK embassies overseas.

- The flexibility to take on new tasks and respond to political or institutional change.

- Good drafting and communication skills with the capability to produce briefing and information notes, often at short notice.

- Excellent planning and project management skills and proficiency in prioritising resources effectively.

Selection process details

Location and working arrangements 

This role is available in Darlington and can only be worked from within the UK, not overseas. Travel to your primary office location will not be paid for by DBT, but costs for travel to an office which is not your main location will be covered.
