Job description

From the design and development of policies to the delivery of services supporting work, welfare, pensions, and child maintenance, DWP is the Government’s largest department.

DMA Leeds is a motivated, supportive, and friendly team. It sits within Policy Group and contributes to the Departmental objectives by:

  • providing legal expertise to DWP decision makers to make high quality benefit entitlement decisions
  • liaising with policy and legal colleagues to ensure legislation is interpreted as intended
  • drafting submissions on Social Security benefits and child support appeal cases to the Upper Tribunal. Promoting the best outcomes for DWP.

Key tasks

You will be required to manage the delivery of your own work, becoming an expert in a particular field of Social Security benefit. You will work as a part of a team, adapting and responding to an ever-changing policy working environment.

As part of your day-to-day role you will:

  • produce high-quality written, technically accurate appeal applications and submissions to His Majesty’s Courts and Tribunal Service (HMCTS)
  • utilise expertise to draft case specific legal guidance to operational colleagues
  • coordinate with stakeholders to quality assure a range of learning and development products
  • build positive relationships with team members and stakeholders to effectively handle complex cases and manage litigation risk
  • ensure that team records, Excel spreadsheets and other reporting mechanisms are accurately maintained

Location

No other locations will be considered. Travel to other sites may be required.

Hybrid Working

This job role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work. The number of days that anyone will be able to work at home will be determined primarily by business need but personal circumstances and other relevant circumstances will also be taken into account. If you are successful, any opportunities for hybrid working, including whether a hybrid working arrangement is suitable for you, will be discussed with you prior to you taking up your post.

1. Application & Sift

As part of the application process you will be asked to complete a CV and to give examples of specific behaviours listed in the advertisement. Further details around what this will entail are listed on the application form.

The CV is for reference only and will not be scored.

The sift will be assessed on the behaviours listed in the Person Specification for which examples of 250 words are required using the Situation, Task, Action and Result (STAR) method can help you give examples of relevant experience that you have. It allows you to set the scene, show what you did and how you did it and explain the overall outcome.

Should a large number of applications be received, an initial sift may be conducted using the lead behaviour, Making Effective Decisions. Candidates who pass the initial sift may be progressed to a full sift, or progressed straight to assessment/interview.

2. Interview Stage

If you are successful at the sift you will be invited to a MS Teams interview. The interview will comprise of Behaviour-Based questions, and shorter strength based questions. The guidance on Success Profiles explains these selection tools. The Behaviours being assessed are detailed in the job advert. 

Candidates invited to interview will receive the Behaviours questions in advance of their interview.

The strengths to be assessed will not be shared ahead of the interview. 

You will be expected to work from the Policy Group hub in Leeds. Please be aware these roles can only be carried out in the UK, not overseas.
