Job description

The Engineering and Technology team lead in providing technical advice and support within OPSS, covering a number of different Regulations across a wide variety of product types in a number of different sectors. We contribute knowledge and experience to cross office activities and work-streams to enhance the understanding and development of policy, supporting Enforcement and responses to Incidents in all regulatory areas that OPSS holds policy or Enforcement responsibility. 

This is a great opportunity where through expertise and experience you can ensure that OPSS actions are made with a comprehensive technical understanding of the issues and evidence. We are recruiting to a post within the Technical Policy team where you will work with a network of colleagues and stakeholders across OPSS , BSI and Industry.  You will be expected to work flexibly, across teams and tasks, as business priorities evolve. 

You will support OPSS’ work to protect consumers with regards to Toy safety and chemicals used in Cosmetics, predominantly through effective collaboration with the Science Team and BSI Technical Committees. 

Key Responsibilities: 

Your work may include:  

  • ​Lead contact for all tasks concerning Cosmetics and Toys.
  • Working with Science and Policy colleagues to deliver an effective and proportionate response to the protection of consumers from the harmful effects of chemicals.
  • Undertaking technical assessment of new Standards allocated for Designation by OPSS.
  • Providing technical input and answering queries in a timely manner.
  • Providing support for wider OPSS activities concerning Toys and Cosmetics.
  • Represent the views of OPSS and wider Government on the development of standards for those committees within your lead areas.
  • Mapping out chemical standards within consumer products, identifying gaps and feeding this into a wider analytical chemical capability strategy​.

Essential Criteria

  • Experience in a technical role in any of the following fields: regulation, standards for consumer products, or compliance.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to changing workloads and priorities. 
  • Ability to research, analyse, understand, and communicate technical information to non-technical colleagues and support understanding in a particular area. 
  • Understanding of technical requirements and the impact on policy and standards.

Desirable Criteria

  • Obtained Degree (or equivalent level qualification or experience) in any Science or Engineering related subject. 
  • Knowledge of UKCA/CE marking or Product Safety Legislation.

The role will be based in London, Teddington and Birmingham
