Job summary

The Taxonomist will deliver RBG Kew’s mission by providing fungal taxonomic expertise to a major programme that aims to sequence 20,000 fungi and lichen specimens held by RBG Kew’s fungarium and the Natural History Museum (NHM). Over a 4-year period, the project will adopt a mixed approach of whole genome sequencing and barcoding techniques. Containing more than 1.25 million specimens including 50,000 type specimens of worldwide origin, Kew’s fungarium is home to the largest and most complete fungal collection in the world, with many specimens being only available at Kew.

Job description

The Taxonomist post will be responsible for the design and implementation of the Fungarium sampling strategy, providing general taxonomic expertise, species identification aid, and training of staff, students, and visitors. The Taxonomist will conduct taxonomic and systematic research of groups of interest. Assist in data analyses and interpretation and contribute to publishing and dissemination of project outputs, including papers, books, reports, and electronic products.

Person specification

We are seeking candidates with a track record in fungal taxonomy and proficiency in DNA barcoding and phylogenetics techniques for taxonomic purposes. Data management and excellent communication skills, including the ability to write publications and present results, are essential. Experience in curation and molecular lab and -omics techniques are desirable. Knowledge in UK Health and Safety regulations, as well as any analytical methods will be considered as a plus.  You will have a degree, or a relevant equivalent qualification, in a fungal science discipline.

This role is a site-based role at Kew with some travel to NHM, with occasional work from home, subject to operational requirements.
