The National Cyber Crime Unit's (NCCU) Tactical Research & Development team comprises operational deployment officers that support both national and international investigations. Developing and deploying technical solutions to enhance investigations into high-end serious organised crime including: Cyber Crime, Child Exploitation, Firearms and Controlled Drugs. Offering specialist advice and innovative niche capabilities in areas such as encryption, malware, cryptocurrencies and the Dark Web.

Job description

Our Technical Research and Development manager is part of our Tactical Research and Development team, who utilise technology to aid our investigations by utilising Investigatory Powers Act Legislation to cause real world impact against cyber criminals. These roles are core to the delivery of NCCU and wider NCA operations. We provide access to the most up to date tooling and training opportunities. 

Within this role you may be exposed to images of Child Sexual Exploitation: Those involved in child sexual abuse and exploitation target the most vulnerable and innocent members of our community. The NCA works tirelessly and diligently against these individuals and you may be expected to work directly or indirectly in tackling this threat. This may involve exposure to child sexual abuse images and material and you should consider and be aware of the sensitive nature of the work before deciding to apply. 

To provide support all officers working on or assisting this type of operational activity will undergo a psychological assessment on taking up the role and at regular intervals once in post.

The successful candidate will be required to travel for business purposes across the UK and overseas. Therefore, a Full DVLA Licence (Includes Full EU Licences) and Passport are required.

***To be considered, you will need to successfully complete SC Enhanced clearance before commencing the role and achieve DV STRAP clearance within the first 12 months in post. Applicants must be willing to undergo DV clearance and STRAP induction and be full UK Nationals or Dual Nationals, of whom one component is British may be considered on a case by case basis***

Person specification

Lead a multi-discipline technical team responsible for:

  • Providing operational support (across SOC, and UK Law Enforcement) and guidance on an exceptional bases to ad-hoc operational requirements.
  • Incident response (Threat Hunt) deploying to time-critical incidents both nationally and internationally.
  • Analyse and interpret data to provide targeted intelligence and evidential packages to investigation teams, wider law-enforcement and government departments. 
  • Develop specialised skill sets in order to become subject matter experts in cyber-related areas such as Malware, Encryption, Obfuscation and Cryptocurrencies.
  • Provide technical support and create bespoke technical solutions for NCCU/NCA investigation teams and UK and international law enforcement.
  • Work with UK and international partners in government, academia and industry to build relationships, develop techniques and define best practice. 
  • Participate in developing and implementing new cyber techniques, methods and practices.
  • Continuously improve cyber investigation capabilities in order to keep pace with new and developing threats
  • Supporting development and delivery of specialist capabilities, offering expertise to support law enforcement partners across the UK and internationally ensuring adherence to legal and ethical standards and collaborating with various teams for coordinated efforts.
  • Bridge technical teams with operational teams ensuring good flow of communications to advise of feasibility and progress.

      You will then be asked to attend an interview in order to have a more in-depth discussion of your previous experience and professional competence. 

      The interview will comprise of 1 round, which will assess Behaviours, Technical/Experience skills and Strengths.

Please be advised that the type of interview (eg. virtual/face-to-face) may be subject to change and successful candidates will be notified of this prior to attending.       Additional Information 

      • The NCA is a 24/7 organisation, and working patterns must support business requirements. Some roles may require you to respond at short notice or outside of core hours.
