Job description

The post holder will be responsible for the instruction, up to Foundation Degree level, (BTEC Higher National equivalent), of military and civilian marine engineering trainees in delivery of theoretical and practical training of in-service Marine Gas Turbines to trainees of all levels from the MoD, Industry, and Foreign and Commonwealth Armed Forces. The scope of this training includes Gas Turbine Construction, Operation, Maintenance, Diagnosis and Repair Techniques. Instructors are also required to complete formal assessment and evaluation of students.

Regular duties include the maintenance and updating of existing training course documentation to reflect changes to equipment and technology, and assisting with the development of new courses, including the documentation, media, and methods.

This post includes a secondary role delivering instructors may be called upon to deliver training of other Marine Engineering Subjects, where the incumbent is suitably qualified and experienced. Minor maintenance of training equipment/training aids is also required as appropriate.

Please note that DSMARE is due to transfer to Navy Command within the period Nov 2024 to Nov 2025. This post may therefore be in scope for potential outsource under Project Selborne during this period.

A successful candidate will be responsible for delivery of training in the required subjects to classes of up to trainees per class. Instructional loading will absorb up to 80% of your time. When not instructing, the post holder will be required to maintain currency in subject matter, prepare teaching material, upkeep designated subject course documentation, develop new training delivery techniques such as virtual & online training, invigilate & mark examinations/ assessments, propose course ware change requirements and set new examination questions as appropriate. Once experienced, mentor and develop new team members.


Desirable Qualifications

Candidates should have served a recognised marine engineering apprenticeship or a relevant alternative period of training and to have obtained a relevant national qualification in Engineering or a closely related subject. Additionally, candidates must have at least 5 years recent relevant practical experience.

Candidates who have completed UK Armed Forces Marine Engineering training and have attained Senior Non-Commissioned Officer level and have a proven track record of marine technical experience will be deemed as meeting the necessary requirements.


Desirable Experience

Experience of training delivery and/or a teaching qualification (e.g.Cert Ed/DTLLS), although formal training in Defence Trainer course and the opportunity to study for a civilian qualification in teaching will be made available to the successful candidate.
