Job description

The Defence Medical Services (DMS) is a core, critical support ‘Function’ within Defence, providing high quality, safe, occupationally focused healthcare to UK Armed Forces personnel stationed or Operationally Deployed across the UK and the rest of the world. Our unifying purpose: to ensure Armed Forces personnel are fit to fight, and supported to fight back to fitness.

To achieve its purpose, the DMS provides a comprehensive range of primary healthcare services (PHC, Dental, Mental Health, Rehabilitation) in over 400 facilities (globally), promoting, protecting and restoring the health of the UK armed forces; whilst also enabling the delivery of Healthcare on Deployment, and the careful management of patients in transition back to the UK.

Project and Programme Managers play a vital role in enabling the DMS to improve its healthcare services and operations. Working as part of a team of Portfolio Delivery professionals, our team supports each other to design, plan and deliver successful outcomes across an exciting and challenging healthcare transformation and modernisation portfolio.

This role requires an experienced, suitably qualified Project Delivery professional, with experience of delivering change and improvement within a healthcare setting. The successful candidate will also be expected to a commitment to developing their own skills, and the abilities of their peers, with access to a support network; and extensive opportunities to learn and develop via cross-government project delivery groups, communities of practice, and the many Training and Development opportunities available across the DMS, Defence and Government.

The successful candidate will initially be assigned to the delivery of a project within an exciting, high-profile programme, championed and supported by the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak. The Catterick Integrated Care Campus is a joint programme between the Ministry of Defence and the National Health Service, building, designing and establishing the first purposely designed healthcare facility resourced by both the MOD and NHS, providing a range of healthcare services supporting local NHS patients and UK Armed Forces personnel stationed at Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire. Strategic Command Transformation 

Strategic Command is going through a significant transformation programme which aims to improve the way the Command conducts its business and delivers for Defence and the nation. As a consequence of this, all posts within Strategic Command Headquarters and in time the wider organisation, are/will be subject to review and potential changes as we continuously improve across the period of the transformation programme. These changes may be minor or could be more substantive and will generate new opportunities.  Throughout, the Command’s transformation programme is committed to following the MOD’s framework on managing and supporting people through the change process and places an emphasis on early and open consultation and engagement with the Command’s personnel and Trade Unions.

Duties and responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to:

  • Motivating, Coordinating and Leading multidisciplinary teams in the delivery of approved project plans. Making day to day decisions in line with approved plans.
  • Managing, reporting and where required, escalating Risks, Issues, Opportunities. Additionally, monitor Assumptions and Dependencies to effect and in line with wider programme methodologies.
  • Working with dependent projects and programmes to align schedules, deconflict, collaborate and identify opportunities.
  • Leading on associated procurement activities in support of project acquisition objectives and in line with Defence and Government Commercial policy.

This job role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is an informal, non-contractual and voluntary arrangement, blending a balance of attendance in the workplace (your permanent duty station which is based on business assessment of where the work is best done) and working from home as a personal choice (if the role is suitable for this).
