Job description

This role sits within the Digital Technology Analysis Team (DTAT). Our team is diverse, inclusive and focused on individual wellbeing. We are proud to support lots of different working patterns, locations and learning and development activity. We are a multidisciplinary team of social researchers, economists, operational researchers and statisticians.

The team's purpose is to support a broad policy portfolio, including domestic issues on Data, Digital, Cyber, Emerging Technology, Security and Online Harms, as well as a team looking at related international issues.

Each of these policy areas is supported by a dedicated part of DTAT.

This campaign is seeking to hire 3 experienced (SEO) analysts, to fill 2 roles in the team that supports the Data Policy Directorate (the Data Policy Analytical Team) and 1 role in the Digital and Tech Policy Team (the Digital Economy Unit).

  • You must be a full member of one of the following analytical professions: Government Social Research Service (GSR), Government Statistician Group (GSG), Government Economics Service (GES) or Government Operational Research Service (GORS).

Or

  • You must be able to demonstrate that a) you satisfy the eligibility criteria and b) have the competence, at the required grade (e.g. HEO/SEO/G7/G6), for one of the analytical professions.

    (a) Eligibility requirements of the analytical professions are as follows:

    GES: Must have a first or 2.1 honours bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) with at least 50 per cent of economics in the two final years (or equivalent); or a Post Graduate Diploma (or equivalent) or a Master's degree in economics, including a substantial amount of taught macro and microeconomics. Economic Adviser candidates must demonstrate substantial proven competence in applied economics as a professional economist.

GSG:

  • A first- or second-class honours degree in a numerate subject (2:1 minimum for Assistant Statistician and 2:2 minimum for Statistical Officer) containing at least 25% taught statistical content (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Business Studies, Psychology, Geography or similar)
  • A higher degree, e.g. a MSc or PhD, in a subject containing formal statistical training (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Business Studies, Psychology, Geography or similar)
  • Have achieved or on track to achieve a level 4 apprenticeship including at least 2 years in a statistical/data analysis field in government and are able to demonstrate continuous professional development in statistics/data analysis.
  • Have worked in a statistical or data science field for an extended period of time and are able to demonstrate Continuous Professional Development (via a logbook) in applying statistics or data science at the same level as a foundation degree or Higher National Diploma (level five), which demonstrates the expected skills as outlined in the GSG Competency framework.

    GSR:
  • For qualification route, must hold an undergraduate degree at a minimum of 2:2. The degree must contain substantial social research methods training (comprising around one-third of modules taken on the course) including quantitative research methods.
  • For professional experience route, must hold an undergraduate degree at a minimum of 2:2, in any subject, or a degree equivalent (e.g. an advanced Certificate or Diploma from MRS), plus have extensive experience/ knowledge of social research practice experience. Social research practice experience consists of experience working in a research agency, market research agency or specialist research team.
    GORS:
  • A degree at 2.1 (or equivalent) or an MSc in a highly numerate subject, or equivalent experience, and be able to demonstrate relevant experience in your career in a relevant profession.

Depending on the analytical profession you apply under you may be required to do an online test prior to interview.
