We are seeking a Senior Service Designer who will act as an expert practitioner in supporting the delivery of government schemes aimed at achieving policy outcomes that contribute to Net Zero. The ideal candidate will play a pivotal role, working in close collaboration with user-centred design colleagues and multidisciplinary digital delivery teams. As an influencer and mentor, the lead service designer will also help establish the service design practice within Ofgem, offering guidance, support, and mentorship to more junior designers.

In this role, you'll collaborate with Product Managers and Service Owners to develop design concepts and oversee their execution, leading projects of varying complexity. You'll support service design practices, contribute to the Ofgem User-Centred Design (UCD) community, and elevate service design understanding across the organisation. Your tasks include producing and maintaining design documents, guiding the design strategy for services, and ensuring smooth collaboration with cross-functional teams for effective project delivery. Additionally, you'll streamline UCD processes and facilitate a seamless transition to operational delivery.

As a Senior Service Designer you will work as an expert practitioner to support the delivery of government schemes that deliver policy outcomes contributing to Net Zero. The successful candidate will work closely with user-centred design colleagues and multidisciplinary digital delivery teams. who influences and mentors others. The lead service designer will also support the establishment of service design practice in Ofgem, providing guidance, support and mentorship for more junior designers.  

 As a senior practitioner, you will:  

  • work with Product Managers and Service Owners to develop design concepts 
  • set direction and assure the quality of design delivery across teams 
  • lead on multiple or highly complex services 

Key Responsibilities

  • Support service design activities on projects across Delivery & Schemes
  • Contribute to and work to service design best practice
  • Participate in the development of Ofgem UCD community
  • Support other UCD roles to have a better understanding of service design
  • Support design leads to increase awareness and understanding of service design across Ofgem

Key Outputs and Deliverables

  • Create an maintain design artefacts in projects, working with the multidisciplinary team and relevant stakeholders
  • Set design direction for products and services, working closely with User Centred Design colleagues, Business Analysts and Project Manager
  • Enable and support efficient handover to operations for delivery
  • Support the service design lead and principal designer in the development of clear and efficient ways of working for User Centred Design

Person specification

Professional experience in service design (LEAD)

Professional experience of working with Interaction Design, Content Design and User Research (LEAD)

Ability to understand technical, business and user needs, and to communicate them simply

Proven ability to lead others to make good design decisions

Ability to prioritise and mitigate design constraints
