Job summary

The Media and Creative Industries Directorate (MCI) covers broad and exciting areas of work. If you join our team you will work across government and industry to drive forward policy in a range of dynamic sectors, including TV, radio, film, music, press, fashion, gaming and advertising.

We are recruiting for a highly interesting and stretching role as a Senior Policy Advisor in the video games and esports team. 

The team works across the fast-growing, creative and innovative video games and esports sectors, developing policies on important issues relating to the growth and competitiveness of the UK industry, and on the impact of games on society. The role will allow the successful candidate to develop different policy skills, and undertake wide-ranging internal and external stakeholder engagement.

Job description

Responsibilities of the role will include: 

  • Developing expert knowledge of the UK games and esports sectors and building productive relationships with relevant organisations and companies operating in the UK.
  • Briefing for ministers and senior officials, drafting answers to PQs and dealing with correspondence cases.
  • Supporting or leading the effective management and ongoing delivery of a range of projects. The team’s activity includes:
    • Working with the games industry and within DCMS to improve player protections with regards to loot boxes in video games; 
    • Oversight of the UK Games Fund - a £13.4 million spending programme to support early-stage games studios and development of UK talent. 
    • Supporting the Games Rating Authority - the Government’s designated body to provide age ratings in video games. 
    • Working with the BFI, HMT and HMRC on administration of video games tax relief. 
    • Collaborating with academics to support high-quality research into video games. 
    • Working with esports stakeholders on growth opportunities.
    • Assisting with a range of topical and reactive issues across the creative industries team. 

Person specification

The ideal candidate would have the following key skills and experience:

Essential Requirements:

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to succinctly explain complex and/or technical issues to diverse stakeholders. 
  • A proven ability to identify, analyse and assess a range of evidence to inform effective decisions, and to understand how individual policy priorities fit into wider policy and organisational benefits. 
  • A team player, able to build strong relationships with colleagues and stakeholders from different backgrounds and disciplines to deliver common goals. 
  • Highly organised and able to deliver across multiple priorities in a time-pressured environment. 

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience of, or interest in, the video games sector and / or creative industries.
