Job summary

The EU Hub is a friendly unit which sits within the EUST (EU, Services and Trade) Directorate within the Department for Business and Trade (DBT). EUST acts as the voice for UK business interests in the EU, which remains the UK’s largest single trading partner. The EU Hub oversees and coordinates the department’s EU priorities ensuring they align with overall departmental objectives to drive economic growth, support business, including work to boost UK-EU Services trade and investment.  

The EU Hub performs a cross-cutting policy, engagement, strategy and coordination function. Our team collaborates extensively with other policy teams in DBT, cross-government partners such as FCDO, Posts, HMT, other government departments as well as with external stakeholders including Business Representative Organisations.  

This is a unique and exciting opportunity in the EU Hub. You will be driving forward the department’s UK-EU business engagement helping to advice, support and promote British businesses views to inform the department’s UK-EU trade and economic strategy. You will support the development and implementation of the EU Hub’s business engagement strategy to support businesses grow and export into the EU Market. 

No prior knowledge is required, other than a wider understanding of the UK’s relationship with the EU. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate a willingness to quickly build professional relationships with a range of stakeholders, work in a collaborative and joined manner and deliver through others.

Job description

We are seeking a business engagement lead to work across the Directorate and DBT supporting and implementing our UK-EU business engagement strategy. This role will require an ability to work with, and through others and communicate and influence effectively. The post holder will need to be a self-starter and well organised. Travel will sometimes be required. 

The successful candidate will:    

  • Support the development of a business engagement strategy and lead on the implementation of the strategy. 
  • Establish strong working relationships within DBT with an ability to deliver through others where necessary.  
  • Strategically engage with OGDs, UK and EU-based organisations on UK/EU trade, through both a series of bilateral meetings and regular industry/government steering group. 
  • Provide high-quality advice to Ministers and/or Senior Civil Servants to support business engagement.   
  • Disseminate industry insights to relevant policy teams across HMG, making recommendations for policy development, and providing briefings to senior officials and ministers attending business engagements.   
  • Build and maintain an understanding of UK/EU trade issues affecting industry. 
  • Work at pace under pressure and at times conflicting pressures. 
  • Be flexible and agile to support the needs of the team. 
  • You will have line management responsibility for 1 HEO.

Essential Criteria 

  • Have experience working collaboratively across a range of stakeholders, demonstrating strong communication skills and successful tailoring of approach to deliver outcomes. 
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise workload. 
  • Ability to work at pace, remaining flexible and adaptable to successfully deliver priorities in a fast-moving environment. 
  • Confident written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate with colleagues and external stakeholders at all levels. 
  • A keen interest of the wider political context and how our work sits within it. 
  • A self-starter with an enthusiasm for business engagement and working on EU matters.  
  • Ability to think strategically and work collaboratively with teams in DBT, the rest of government, businesses, BROs and external stakeholders. 
  • Successful candidates must have passed a Security Check or be prepared to achieve clearance ahead of starting the role.  

Desirable Criteria  

  • Previous experience of working on business engagement. 
  • Knowledge or experience of working with the EU or on EU policy.  
  • Knowledge or experience of trade policy
