Job description

This is a high-profile role, offering the rare opportunity to play a pivotal part in the operationalisation of a digital application, while gaining experience in policy development, digital projects, and strategy.

The Department for Transport is developing the Forensic Collision Investigation Application (FCIA), a digital application solely for the use of Police Forensic Collision Investigators (PFCIs). . This is because the DfT have a responsibility to maintain high standards of safety and security in transport, with a priority to build a One Nation Britain. The FCIA will empower the police with a single means of identifying causation factors and ensuring offenders are brought to justice, thereby removing threats from Great Britain’s roads.

PFCIs attend the most serious road traffic collisions (RTCs) across Great Britain, and look at physical evidence on the road, such as tyre marks, damage to vehicles and other environmental factors, to establish from a scientific perspective what may have happened. The existing process needs a digital overhaul from pen and paper to a digital form and the FCIA will achieve this.

The FCIA project is dynamic and fast-paced, in a constantly evolving, challenging, and exciting environment. This project is a central part of the Department’s new Road Safety Strategic Framework and represents a real step forward in the Department’s understanding of and contribution to the reduction of road traffic collisions.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work with the G7 Policy and Legislation Lead in developing the necessary policy and digital products, such as a strategic outline business case, digital and policy strategy, as well as various documentation for governance boards.
  • Work with colleagues across DfT, OGDs, and the private sector to deliver the policy and digital workstream that will provide a robust foundation for the operational capability of the DfT in respect of road safety;
  • Represent the Department in discussions with other government Departments, senior internal and external stakeholders, and third-party stakeholders;
  • Manage one third-party supplier, one contractor, and one secondee.
