Job summary

We’re looking for an exceptional Senior Operational Meteorologist to join our team at JOMOC and help us make a difference to our planet.

This position will be based at Northwood Headquarters.

Through this campaign we're recruiting for three permanent roles. A list of successful reserve candidates will also be held for twelve months and will be offered roles as they come up. Any temporary and/or part time positions have the potential to develop in to permanent and/or full time positions.

As our Senior Operational Meteorologist - JOMOC your starting salary will be £38838.00. New joiners to the Met Office will start on the salary band minimum. Our 2022-25 pay award means the salary will increase to £41725.00 from 1st April 2024, and you will be able to progress towards £45257.00 over time.

 In addition you will be paid:

  • £4,000 pa Unsocial Hours Allowance (UHA) - Post Based Shift
  • £2,000 pa DEL - Location Low Allowance
  • Relocation assistance may be available

Your total reward package is potentially worth up to £53,757 annually, which includes basic salary, potential corporate bonus and employer pension contributions.

The Met Office National Security Advice Group (NSAG) delivers meteorological advice and insight to HM Government as well as MOD policy and decision makers as part of a cross-government approach to national security. NSAG is now made up of analysts, technical architects, engineers and meteorologists in HQ, Mobile Meteorological Unit (MMU) and Joint Operational Meteorology and Oceanography Centre (JOMOC).

Job Purpose:

As a Senior Operational Meteorologist - JOMOC, your purpose is to provide global on-site embedded and remote environmental services to enable the UK and Allied armed forces to gain operational and tactical advantage during deployments.

Your accountabilities and responsibilities in this job are as follows:

  • To apply operational service delivery knowledge and subject matter expertise of the defence user and global meteorology, when collaborating with our colleagues across Met Office/Navy Hydrography and Meteorology (HM) teams, to ensure a consistent environmental picture for the defence users.
  • To manage and deliver environmental services to Permanent Joint Headquarters (PJHQ), Joint Force Headquarters (JFHQ) and Joint Force Air Component (JFAC) briefing command teams regularly as well as producing seasonal forecasts and climate briefs to assist with planning of current and future operations and exercises.
  • To maintain an on-site embedded presence in PJHQ, JFHQ and JOMOC.To manage and deliver remote environmental services to deployed defence users.
  • To manage and conduct environmental analysis to respond to Requests for Information (RFIs) from a variety of defence users.
  • To ensure services are delivered in line with priorities, quality standards, resource, health and safety and business continuity procedures, contributing to the creation and maintenance of these.
  • To identify lessons, opportunities and manage improvements to increase the team’s effectiveness and efficiency.
  • To develop and maintain relationships with our defence users and colleagues that enhances the Met Office and JOMOC’s reputation.
  • To train, coach and mentor newer members of the team in both the Met Office, JOMOC and military awareness and skills needed for this role.
  • To carry out continuing professional development in line with current and future needs of the role.
