Job summary

Are you looking for a change that is stimulating and rewarding! The Nuclear Department within, Navy Command, has an important role in providing education and training ranging from introductory to postgraduate level to Service and MOD Civilian personnel, in support of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Programme as well as bespoke courses for the wider nuclear industry.

Our multidisciplinary team consists of specialists in materials, physics, chemistry and thermal hydraulics related to nuclear power applications.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

You will play a key role in educating and training personnel involved in the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program in Radiological Protection.

Person specification

Deliver lectures, tutorials and research project design up to RFQ Level 7 (Masters Level). Design, develop and assess courses in:

• Radiation quantities and units

• Radiological protection philosophy and its application through legislation

• Dispersion of radioactive material in the environment, in both emergencies and routine release scenarios

• Analytical interpretation of radiation sample results and the application of the reading to support operational health physics or emergency response

You will also:

• Liaise with other Government departments and Civil Nuclear Industry to ensure a consistent approach to radiation protection and health physics advice

• Peer review MOD Radiation Protection practice and policy

• Liaise with nuclear regulators providing an internal assessment role and feedback on findings

• Direct and influence radiation protection and health physics methodologies, decisions and proposal at a strategic level

• Design, supervise and assess student projects

• Undertake Course Manager duties

• Maintain, develop and manage codes and software

• Use and manage codes and software relating to radiological dispersion such as PC-CREAM, CONDOR

• Attend working groups and represent the department at conference and working groups

• Ensure continued professional development in area of specialist knowledge
