It is the responsibility of the Information, Technology and Facilities Division to ensure that everyone in the organisation can access our data and information, to share it and to use it to make effective decisions. We support over 3000 colleagues working in a hybrid style at home and in 26 offices across Great Britain. Our services keep inspectors functioning effectively and efficiently on industrial sites nationwide, from oil platforms in the North Sea to our deepest mines and quarries.

Job description

You will manage the HSE’s hosting infrastructure, ensuring that the infrastructure (data centres, servers, data storage, core switches, back up, load-balancers solutions) remains available, performant to SLAs/OLAs and relevant to business requirements. Your role will monitor the infrastructure, investigating incidents, resolving problems, and developing and applying fixes and changes. Your role will deliver upgrades, implement new functionality and seek to continuously improve the infrastructure to support the organisation in better ways. Your role will ensure that the hosting infrastructure is secure, protecting HSE’s data and users from cyber-attack and unauthorised loss. Your role will engage with users, supporting their needs and ensuring that a high-quality customer-focused service is delivered.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the Hosting Team, including line management of one or more Hosting team members.
  • Lead and deliver the highest standards of user and customer focus, ensuring that services are delivered to user/customer satisfaction. Endeavour to routinely communicate with users/customers to promote confidence that incidents and requests are being progressed.
  • Monitor and operate the HSE hosting infrastructure (on-premise, PaaS, IaaS and SaaS), 
    ensuring services remain available 24/7/365, performant to SLAs/OLAs, and delivering a 
    good user and customer experience.
  • Lead the delivery of event, incident, problem, capacity and change management by the 
    Hosting Team.
  • Ensure that services and information are backed up. Lead routine tests of disaster recovery 
    and business continuity plans to maintain confidence in the resilience of the hosting 
    infrastructure.
  • Plan, implement and monitor upgrades to the hosting infrastructure, coordinating change 
    activity, engaging with users and ensuring that upgrades are understood and appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate configuration management and asset information for the hosting
    infrastructure.
  • Responsibility for the security of the hosting infrastructure, defending against cyber-attack, 
    preventing unauthorised access, unauthorised data exchange and data-loss.

Travel

There will be regular travel to HSE's data centres in Bootle, Basingstoke & Farnborough.

Working Pattern

Fixed working patterns which will include Saturdays, 37 hour week based on a 5-day working week and 7.4 hours day. The working week is between 07:00 and 19:00 (7:00am to 7:00pm) Monday to Friday and Saturday morning. Post holder will be required to be on an On Call Rota.

Part time working hours are available for this role. We can accept part time applicants who can commit to working a minimum of 30 hours (4 days) per week

Person specification

Essential skills and criteria

  • Proven experience delivering hosting services performant to SLAs/OLAs and maintaining a strong customer focus
  • Proven experience of leading engineering teams
  • Proven experience with the installation, configuration, and management; of VMware vSphere and ESXi, enterprise storage arrays, enterprise backup solutions
  • Proven experience with the configuration and management of Windows Active Directory, Azure Active Directory and Exchange Online

Desirable criteria

  • Experience with Cisco UCS, HPE 3PAR, VMware, Azure, Rubrik
  • Experience of cloud-based hosting infrastructure (Azure, AWS)
  • Experience of deploying Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
  • ITIL Foundation
