Job description

An opportunity has arisen to join the Corporate Services Finance Business Partnering team in DESNZ.

The role is to lead a team of four in the delivery of business planning and financial control for the Corporate Services group within DESNZ, and will also be the main point of contact for Business Planning and Budgetary Control with Integrated Corporate Services (ICS). The ICS shares Finance, HR, Commercial, Digital and other services across DESNZ,  Department for Business & Trade, and Department for Science, Innovation and Techology.  

The holder will be responsible for supporting on Corporate Services(CS) monthly reporting to budget, understanding drivers for forecast and actuals, and any movements in these.

The role holder will require the ability to drive financial management and insight, including identifying possible areas for focus and improvement and develop cost mitigation, income generation or risk management strategies.

Key responsibilities

Key duties/tasks that the candidate will be responsible for:

  • Undertaking the detailed analysis and tracking of the CS Budget position.
  • Leading on the CS business planning process and submissions into the central strategic finance team.
  • Supporting and managing the CS FBP team.
  • Being the key point of contact between the Integrated Corporate Services (ICS) and DESNZ.
  • Challenging forecasts provided by the ICS and feed ICS budget requirements into DESNZ business planning.
  • Providing insight that helps the business understand their past and planned performance whilst helping them identify and mitigate against risk.
  • Leading problem solving and provision of robust advice and options of how they may be overcome to reach a positive solution.
  • Leading on CS business planning and any spending review preparations.
  • Acting as a champion for continuous improvement.
  • Dealing with ad hoc requests.

Skills and experience

  • Self starter who can build strong collaborative relationships with peers which deliver good outcomes.
  • Strong numerical and communication skills, so that the numbers are always clear and correct and the story they are telling is clear.
  • Highly developed organisational skills to effectively create and supervise plans and see them through to delivery and completion.
  • Well developed people management and team building skills.
  • Qualified accountant with a strong finance/ accounting skillset.
