Job description

The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) is an executive non-departmental public body of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Driven by government’s aim for clean, healthy, safe, productive and biologically diverse oceans and seas, MMO’s purpose is to protect and enhance our precious marine environment, and support UK economic growth by enabling sustainable marine activities and development.

We are the independent regulator for England’s seas, professionally delivering service-focussed outcomes for our customers.

We are a team of around 500 people and combine our Newcastle upon Tyne and London operations with a local presence around the English coastline in Brixham, Beverley, Harwich, Hastings, Lowestoft, North Shields, Hayle, Plymouth, Poole, Portsmouth, Preston, Scarborough, Shoreham, Whitehaven.

We also have colleagues based in Defra offices, including Bristol, Cambridge and York where we share office space.

More information about our work is on the GOV.UK website and you can read the MMO’s Story here.

As the UK is a newly independent coastal state, this is a really exciting time to join the MMO as we embed new repatriated functions and services with an increased focus on the protection and enhancing of the marine environment.

This position is within the Operations Directorate’s Fisheries Management Plan and International Team (‘FMP Team’), which is part of the Sustainable Fisheries function, however there is close alignment with and support from the MMO’s Evidence and Evaluation team. FMPs are an ambitious new way of working collaboratively with the fishing industry and other stakeholders to manage our fisheries sustainably for current and future generations. The FMP team is responsible for MMO’s input into the overall programme of 43 FMPs (as set out in the Joint Fisheries Statement) and, most importantly, for preparing and implementing FMPs as part of the Government’s world class fisheries ambition. We work closely with other MMO teams and with Defra, other government bodies, the commercial and recreational fishing industries, and other stakeholders including environmental Non-Governmental Organisations (eNGOs).

We are looking for an experienced Senior Evidence Specialist to join the FMP team on a permanent basis. This position is a unique opportunity to play a crucial role in the development of FMPs. This role will focus on the analysis of evidence from a range of sources to understand the species, stocks and fisheries within an FMP, identifying any gaps in that evidence and providing proposals to manage and close such gaps, as well as providing supporting evidence for any proposed management measures, including where a precautionary approach is taken.

This role will suit someone who is well-organised and can work both autonomously and as part of a team, and is good at establishing relationships within the team, across MMO and the wider Defra network as needed. Within the role there is also the opportunity to participate in stakeholder engagement both in-person and online, and may suit someone who has an interest in actively helping shape the future of fisheries management.

Full details can be found in the attached candidate pack.
