Job summary

We are looking for an ambitious and proven communications professional to support Defra’s creative and highly-respected Events and Visits team.

The postholder will oversee the continued delivery of high-profile events and visits linked to the Secretary of State’s key policy areas including improving and protecting the environment, growing a green economy, sustaining thriving rural communities and supporting our world-leading food, farming, and fishing industries.

This role requires travel within the UK (and may include occasional overseas travel).

Job description

  • Work as part of a talented team of people overseeing external engagement activity and Ministerial visits across the Department.
  • Work collaboratively with other comms pillars and policy teams to ensure that there is a consistent approach to all stakeholder events and visits.
  • Collaborate and build relationships with our external partners in order to facilitate high quality visits and events including agencies, photographers, businesses and other government departments.
  • Build strong relationships with Special Advisers (SpAds) and Private Offices and become a trusted adviser of outreach activity.
  • Line manage two IOs and ensure they have stretching goals and development plans.
  • Drafting detailed itineraries and producing high quality briefings for events and visits working in partnership with policy teams.
  • Advising on stakeholder engagement and communications, and of building excellent networks.
  • Working closely with the Secretary of State, Junior Ministers, Special Advisers, officials and external partners.

Person specification

  • Experience working with press office, digital and strategic comms to deliver high quality work, often at pace.
  • Detailed understanding of Westminster, and of political process in the UK and Devolved Administrations.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of Defra topics and a track record of working with stakeholders.
  • Ability to work at pace and to adapt to changing scenarios.

The successful candidate will require CTC clearance. Therefore, confirmation of appointment to the advertised post will be dependent upon successful CTC clearance being confirmed as part of pre-employment checks.

Location

Please be aware that this role(s) will be contractually based in a Defra group workplace/office. The successful candidate is required to carry out all their duties from a UK location, and cannot do so from an overseas location at any time.

All other applicants will be based in one of the advertised locations.Our current office attendance approach requires 60% attendance in Defra group workplaces or off site meetings with partners and customers. Travel and subsistence will not be paid for travel to a base office location.

A reserve list may be held for a period of 12 months from which further appointments can be made.

Salary

New entrants to the Civil Service are expected to start on the minimum of the pay band. The internal roles rules apply to existing Civil Servants, i.e. level transfers move on current salary or the pay range minimum, transfers on promotion move to new pay range minimum or receive 10% increase. Either case is determined by whichever is the highest.
