Job summary

You will work as part of the Chief Data Officer, Data Function and will be part of the Data Management team reporting to the Head of Data Management 

You will lead on new practices and procedures through the roll out of the enterprise data cataloguing and feeding into wider data standards framework, data quality remediation and maturity assessments . It will involve further developing the Data Management capability to meet changing needs and stay aligned to Cabinet Office Data Strategy and Government wide Data Strategies and standards. It will involve supporting Business units in improving data management practices through cataloguing their data to discover, understand and make better use of data. 

You will ensure across the Cabinet Office that Business Units manage data assets and that the data culture, literacy and skills are improved, aligned with the maturity targets to be established.  

The Data function is geographically dispersed at present and has achieved a culture where there is a high level of team cohesion regardless of an individual’s base location with team members based in Manchester, London and at home. It is our intent to establish an increased presence in Bristol and Manchester and this amongst other roles are sought to be predominantly based in these locations.  

As a Data Management Lead you will be working in partnership with peers and senior managers across the Cabinet Office to ensure that data management practices are embedded. This will require planning across people, process and technology.   

Job description

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate from experience a passion for Data Management and is a determined leader who is credible and able to gain buy-in to improving data management across the department  

The post holder will work with the Head of Data Management to align strategic intent for Data and Information across the Cabinet Office:  

  • Roll out data cataloguing across the department 
  • Maintain a centralised metadata catalogue including overseeing data ingestion and extraction processes, and ensuring the catalogue is up-to-date and accessible to relevant stakeholders.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams, such as data engineers, data scientists, and business analysts, to understand their metadata needs and requirements.  
  • Communicating effectively with stakeholders to gather metadata requirements, resolve issues, and provide guidance on metadata-related matters 
  • Work with stakeholders to define, maintain, and support application, business glossary, business intelligence, data integration, data modelling, and database management resources. 
  • Understand stakeholder data quality and master data management requirements and tooling capabilities 
  • Facilitate onboarding new teams and projects onto the shared environments
  • Develop, publish and promote best practices
  • Partner with vendors so we can make the best use possible of the tools

Person specification

  • Substantial experience and working knowledge with Enterprise data cataloguing tool; SAAS Informatica.  
  • Experience with data governance and change management processes  
  • Experienced and knowledgeable with data management processes, metadata management, data stewardship, and data quality  
  • Passionate and knowledgeable about data solutions
  • Ability to accurately handle multiple tasks and projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong analytical skills, able to drill to detail when problem solving
  • Experience defining critical success factors and monitoring progress
  • Strong strategic thinking and ability to analyse and interpret data
