As part of the Observations Research & Development Technology Team, you will be a key a part of developing global and national networks of sensors and instruments, processing high volumes of data that are critical to the Met Office’s supercomputer forecasting models and research.

You will join a passionate and dedicated DevOps team that develop and maintain data ingestion, processing and distribution systems for the observing networks.

Job description

As our Senior Developer - Management - Observations R&D you will explore the best technical solutions and set the direction for your team.

We are looking for an individual with experience of working across the full development lifecycle using Python, Flask, SQL Alchemy, and PostgreSQL. Working in an AWS cloud native environment, you will lead the team through development, delivery and operational activities for the Met Office Observations data storage and distribution systems.

You will work closely with the Technical Architect and Product Owner teams to design and implement modern cloud-based solutions. You will also work collaboratively with your peers in the Observations community, building relationships and sharing your knowledge.

The key duties include:

Provide guidance on the ways in which the team works and provide coaching and mentoring to more junior colleagues.

Work across multidiscipline teams

Understand the entire system and business domain. Take responsibility for technical debt and future feature development.

  • Ownership

Operate the production services you build, improving system robustness, resilience, and stability.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Team leadership You have experience leading a development team in a hybrid environment. Working with peers define processes and select best practice to ensure work is completed efficiently and to a high standard.
  2. Systems design You can design quality systems, selecting appropriate design standards, methods, and tools, and ensure they are communicated and applied effectively.
  3. Programming and build (software engineering) You can collaborate with others to review requirements and use them to design, code, test, and document programs of medium-to-high complexity. You are confident using AWS (Amazon Web Services) technologies, databases, APIs, and Python and can lead others to deliver working software.
  4. Optimisation You can identify optimisation opportunities and describe and implement proposed improvements.
  5. Support You have experience of supporting time-critical services and can respond quickly to problems. You can identify, locate, and fix faults. You can communicate clearly and appropriately according to the audience.

Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:

As our Senior Developer - Management - Observations R&D, your starting salary will be £38838.00. New joiners to the Met Office will start on the salary band minimum. Our 2022-25 pay award means the salary will increase to £41725.00 from 1st April 2024, and you will be able to progress towards £45257.00 over time.

Your total reward package is potentially worth up to £53757.00 annually, which includes basic salary, potential corporate bonus and employer pension contributions.

In addition you will be paid £6000 per annum as a market supplement to reflect the demand for your skills. Whilst in post, you will be paid this market driven allowance from April 2022 until March 2024 in your monthly pay. From April 2024 until September 2025 the confirmed RRA for this post is £5300.
