The Role

We’re recruiting for a Senior Delivery Manager for Sustainability here at Justice Digital, to be part of our warm and collaborative Justice Digital team.

Here in Justice Digital work is well underway towards meeting the actions laid out in the greening government commitments (GGCs) which set out the actions UK government departments and their agencies will take to reduce their impacts on the environment in the period 2021 to 2025.

They set out targets for UK government departments and their agencies to:

  • reduce water consumption
  • reduce their greenhouse gas emissions
  • minimise waste and promote resource efficiency

They also set out commitments for departments to:

  • improve sustainable procurement
  • develop and deliver nature recovery plans
  • develop and deliver climate change adaptation strategies
  • reduce environmental impacts from ICT and digital services

Key Responsibilities:

High-level strategic delivery would include contributing to the following objectives:

  • Co-creating a Digital and Technology Sustainable Action Plan between the Digital and Sustainability teams
  • Greening Government ICT & Digital Services Strategy – Implementation of the strategy in the MoJ
  • Greening Government Commitments – report on the MoJ’s implementation of the Greening Government ICT & Digital Services Strategy and targets
  • Annual STAR reporting and representing the MoJ at the STAR Community of Interest
  • Reporting to the Senior Sustainability Board on progress in this area

Developing and revising Policy and Guidance relating to sustainability and MoJ’s Digital systems

  • Leading the development of social and environmental sustainability criteria and providing specialist input to support the Justice system to make sustainable digital choices to support the Net Zero agenda
  • Proactively engage with other teams and provide specialist advice to ensure that sustainability is factored into decisions about architecture, platforms, standards and technology
  • Developing sustainability metrics and KPIs, having responsibility for ensuring delivery against these and that mechanisms are in place to track and report on delivery

Building strong relationships

  • Ensure that digital is factored in as an enabler across the Net Zero agenda by building strong working relationships with other teams across the organisation
  • Building strong working relationships with digital transformation teams, cross-government working groups and suppliers (where appropriate) to ensure alignment of MoJ sustainability goals

Data Management and Analysis

  • Establish methods for the measurement and quantification of the environmental impact of digital technologies, including accounting for the embodied carbon, Water Usage Efficiency (WUE)and Power Usage Efficiency (PUE) of data centres
  • Collating, interpreting and analysing data from across the organisation relevant to STAR and GGC reporting requirements
  • Establish methods for the measurement and quantification of the carbon impact of digital technologies

Strategy and Reporting

  • Reporting on progress against carbon reduction targets to the Senior Sustainability Board, as required.
  • Developing a long-term Net Zero digital strategy by building the evidence base for sustainable service design and supporting alignment with cross-government initiatives
  • Baselining and identifying priorities for carbon reduction, and ensuring progress are made on early carbon reduction areas, for example, Cloud storage, digitising of paper processes, sustainable procurement, and recycling of devices.

Person Specification

Essential

  • You will be delivery-focused, and have experience in managing complex projects and delivering on time and to budget.
  • You will have experience in contract management and will have dealt with external contractors and partnership organisations.
  • You will have experience in managing complex data and ensuring that best practice is followed
  • You will have Team management experience leading and developing a small delivery team.
  • You will be able to communicate with others in a clear, honest and enthusiastic way to build trust. You will explain complex issues in a way that is easy to understand. Be able to provide updates for senior stakeholders and adept at explaining complex issues to a non-technical audience.
  • You will ensure everyone clearly understands and owns their roles, responsibilities and priorities, ensuring timely quality outcomes are delivered.
