Job summary

We are looking for a Senior Cloud Engineer to join the Cloud Engineering team. 

You will be tasked with owning, supporting and developing our infrastructure and application platforms; you will also provide administration, monitoring, development and user support.

You will work closely with Live Services Cyber Ops, Information Assurance, Architecture, and suppliers to develop and maintain our core infrastructure and services, ensuring they meet all Departmental and Government security standards.

Working in a team of specialist cloud engineers, you will build, administer, support and maintain solutions as directed and according to departmental policy. 

In this role you will:

  • Interact with stakeholders across departments and will reach and influence a wide range of people across larger teams and communities, presenting highly technical information in a confident, clear, concise direct manner to a less technical audience.
  • Provide expert knowledge on area(s) of specialism such as (GCP, M365, Microsoft Azure or AWS) leading by example with your technical expertise.
  • Take ownership of problems and proactively resolve technical problems.
  • Research and apply innovative infrastructure solutions to new or existing problems.
  • Working with DIS Architectural team, provide strategic advice on use of cloud services across agreed platforms.
  • Define best practices for implementing, supporting and maintaining services within area of specialism, ensuring that these best practices are adopted and followed by Cloud Engineers and other teams within Digital Information and Security.
  • Provide technical support on incidents and implement changes for infrastructure and cloud technologies.

Person specification

To be successful in this role you will have experience working in an infrastructure engineering capacity. You will have existing experience of using programming languages and have an understanding of cloud-based software solutions.

You will be a proactive worker and will be comfortable communicating with a wide range of stakeholders. The ability to be open minded and think creatively is welcome as well as the ability to work well within a team.

Please note: the role is flexible in terms of your technology stack experience (so any experience in virtualisation technologies like Hyper-V or Cloud Platforms such as M365, Google Cloud Platform, Azure or AWS). Knowledge of the current stack used at DfT is not mandatory, but you will be expected to transfer your knowledge to technologies used at DfT.

DDaT Allowance

This role is part of the DDaT profession and attracts an enhanced pay scale which is mapped to capability levels. The successful candidate’s starting salary will be determined by performance at interview and assessed capability level. There are two components to DDaT pay - base pay and DDaT allowance. 

The role may also attract a DDaT allowance of up to £10,000. The amount, if afforded is determined by several factors one of which is assessed capability level. 

The successful candidate will be required to undergo yearly capability assessments which may result in pay increases or decreases. A drop in capability in any given assessment period results in 12 month pay protection to allow candidates to retain prior capability level.
