Job description

This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and detail-orientated individual to work within the Vehicle Emissions Trading Schemes Order (VETS) team. You will be part of delivering the Zero Emission Vehicle mandate, which is the Government’s largest single net zero policy and the most ambitious regulation of its kind in the world, to deliver the transition to zero emission vehicles.

VETS is the regulation that will guide the UK new car and van market’s transition to zero emission vehicles, providing and ambitious but achievable pathway for the automotive industry to meet the Government’s commitment to ending the sale of new non-zero emission cars or vans in 2035. Cars and vans made up 18% of the UK’s total CO2 emissions in 2021, and the elimination of these emissions by the schemes saves up to 420 MTCO2e out to 2050.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop and manage administration processes: Manage VETS administrative processes and workflow, iterating them to meet stakeholder needs.
  • Lead the administration team: Be responsible for leading three members of staff, managing time and resource to achieve goals with statutory deadlines and play a leading role in project delivery of the new IT system to support the regulation.
  • Communicate with key stakeholders: Work closely with staff in vehicle manufacturers, devolved administrations, broader UK Government, and Ministers to ensure each party understands the impact of the regulation and has confidence in its operation.
  • Provide advice based on robust evidence: Collaborate with statisticians, policy officials, analysts, and operational delivery professionals, both within the Department for Transport (DfT) and across government, to advise external stakeholders, officials, and Ministers on the operation of the regulation.
