Job summary

As the Section 62A Major Applications Manager you will manage the processing of applications for major development submitted directly to the Planning Inspectorate.  This will include the pre-application and application stages through to the final decision.  You will work closely with Operations and Inspector colleagues ensuring that the applications are handled and decided in line with the relevant timescales and legislation.

Job description

We are looking for someone who is an excellent organiser, self-motivated, open to change, forward thinking and a problem solver.  You will need to be confident in your ability to deal with unexpected situations and be able to draw on your experience and knowledge to identify a way forward. The role will also involve providing casework advice and support to Administrative Officers as part of a small team. 

Your week will include ensuring tasks such as validation, fee collection, consultations, publicity, publishing and issuing decisions have been undertaken and on time.  You will build effective working relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders including Local Planning Authorities, Applicants and Operations and Inspector colleagues.  This will involve regular meetings with the Operations Manager and Inspectors to review progress on individual applications.  At times meetings with external contacts will be necessary.  The overall aim will be to ensure timely casework processing to the required quality and to embed and establish practices and processes.

Office Attendance 

All of our office-based roles are contractually located at Temple Quay House in Bristol. We encourage office attendance to foster collaboration, conversation, group creativity and employee wellbeing. You will be expected to attend Temple Quay House at least 12 times a year. Depending on your role, you may be required to attend more often than 12 times a year either permanently or temporarily to ensure we deliver our services in the most efficient and effective way for our customers. Person specification

Essential Criteria 

  • Demonstrable experience of a planning or infrastructure environment, preferably case work related.
  • Wide ranging level of awareness of consent regimes similar to Section 62A of the Town and Country Planning Act (for example, processing of called-in planning applications and appeals under the Town and Country Planning Act regime)
  • The ability to understand and proactively interpret legislation and guidance and implement this during the processing of Section 62A planning applications. 
  • Demonstrable written and verbal communication skills including the ability to draft bespoke communications to meet the specific circumstances of applications.
  • Experience of working collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders (internal and external) to meet an overall goal.
  • Experienced and proficient in the use of MS Office products. 

Desirable Criteria 

  • Knowledge of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 and the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations 2017.
  • Experience of dealing with large volumes of correspondence, within prescribed timescales, in a planning case work environment.
  • Experience of training staff of various grades in casework tasks.
