Marine Directorate is the lead marine management organisation in Scotland. It was established in April 2009 as a Directorate of the Scottish Government (SG), to integrate core marine functions involving scientific research, compliance monitoring, policy and management of Scotland's seas. The Marine Patrol Vessels are involved in monitoring compliance with International, UK and National rules and regulations of licensed activities in the marine environment around Scotland and out to 200 miles and beyond when required. This includes enforcing UK, International fisheries laws and regulations. This is intended to assist the conservation of fish stocks and in creating the conditions necessary for the existence of a modern and sustainable sea fishing industry.

We currently have a vacancy available for the post of Second Engineer on board Marine Directorate compliance and science vessels. 

As Second engineer your role will be to assist with the main function of The Marine Research Vessels’ in ensuring they run effectively and support the work of the scientific programme within Marine Scotland. Information gathered on research cruises is essential to the success of the scientific programme. To ensure this success both Marine Research Vessels are fitted with a wide range of deployment and recovery facilities for fishing gear and equipment, scientific and environmental sensors, and data gathering systems.

Job description

• Assist the Chief Engineer as required.
• Assist in the safe and efficient operation of the vessel’s machinery.
• Prepare and monitor main machinery and auxiliary equipment.
• Test and maintain the monitoring system for unmanned operation.
• Perform UMS duties on main and auxiliary machinery whilst vessel is at sea and in port.
• Carry out planned maintenance and run repairs on the vessel’s machinery.
• Supervise the Third Engineer and Engine room rating.

Person specification

Qualifications

You will have to hold the following:

• Class 1 (Motor) Unlimited;

• Valid  STCW qualifications;

• Valid ENG 1;

• Security Duties Certificate.


Essential Criteria
1. Recent experience of being a sea going Second Engineer, along with the ability to work to high standards in all marine engineering disciplines.

2. Experience of carrying out planned maintenance and running repairs to ensure the vessel is maintained to Flag and Class Standards by ensuring adherence to the Safety Management System.

3. Ability to work with minimal supervision in a small team to ensure the safe and effective running of the vessel including knowledge of maintenance databases.

4. Ability to deputise for the Chief Engineer  as required.
