Job summary

We are currently looking for a Scientist to join our Diagnostics team within the Science, Research & Innovation group.

This is a full-time opportunity, on a fixed term contract/internal move or temporary promotion basis until 31st August 2025. The role will be lab based in South Mimms, Hertfordshire. Please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency enhance and improve the health of millions of people every day through the effective regulation of medicines and medical devices, underpinned by science and research.  

The Science, Research and Innovation (SR&I) group delivers public health impact through world-leading research and innovation to support clinical trials and availability of novel medicines. It comprises 6 sub-Groups: Innovation Accelerator, Clinical Investigations and Trials, Research and Development, Standards Lifecycle, Control Testing and Quality Assurance and Health & Safety.

The Diagnostics Group performs research to support pre-clinical studies for emerging diseases and research for the development of standards and reference materials that are used globally to support diagnostic assays and vaccine development.

What’s the role?

This is an integral role in a dynamic team, working with clinical samples from infection models of emerging diseases. You will optimise and perform analyses to deliver results in a timely manner and presenting results to the team and wider audiences. The role also presents opportunities to develop new methodologies and present internationally.

Job description

Key responsibilities: 

  • Processing pathological samples (embedding and sectioning)
  • Optimising and performing histopathological analytics (immunohistochemistry and RNAscope)
  • Interpretation and presentation of results both written and oral
  • Working with infectious materials (CL3)

Person specification

Who are we looking for? 

Our successful candidate will have:

  • PhD in virology or related subject, or equivalent experience in virology or related subject scientific research
  • Experience in carrying out histopathological techniques as well as general laboratory procedures with accuracy and reproducibility
  • An understanding of the principles and practices of working with infectious micro-organisms in bio-containment and the ability to follow protocols and adhere to safe working practices
  • Excellent analytical skills, interpreting data and graphical presentation using appropriate computer software
  • Experience of working in high containment laboratory (level 2)
