About the Department
The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) is a major government department, at the heart of the justice system. Responsible for courts, prisons and probation services, we work to ensure sentences are served and offenders are given rehabilitation opportunities to become law-abiding citizens.
The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has one of the largest and most complex spend profiles in central government. The Commercial and Contract Management Directorate (CCMD) is responsible for coordinating procurement and contract management across the MoJ, its agencies and non-departmental public bodies.
The MoJ spends £6.7bn a year and manages over 1000 active contracts, all of which are sourced and managed by CCMD. We are running some of the most groundbreaking programmes such as Prison Reform and His Majesty’s Courts and Tribunal Service Reform. The scope of our contracts ranges from building, maintenance and the operation of Prisons, Courts and Young Offender establishments through to food for prison dogs. The directorate also buys and manages contracts for feeding up to 80,000 prisoners, the secure escorting of prisoners from numerous establishments based around the country and translation services.
CCMD is organised into category teams, each with an interesting portfolio of contracts and diverse customers and suppliers to manage. We also have systems, programme management office, supplier relationship and risk management teams who work across all areas.

MoJ Commercial and Contract Management Directorate (CCMD)
CCMD is responsible for procuring the goods and services required for the delivery of the justice system, the total value of which each year is around £3.2 billion. In recent years, CCMD has conducted some of the most innovative commercial work in government and has played a crucial role in the successful delivery of prison reform and court reform programmes.
The postholder will sit in the Responsible Procurement Team, which, along with the Commercial Policy and Governance Team, forms the Commercial Standards Team in CCMD’s Operating Centre.
The Responsible Procurement Team is responsible for four key areas:
- Promoting compliance with social value policy and developing ways of working to capture and share outcomes across the MoJ.
- Delivery of the CCMD Sustainability Action Plan in collaboration with the wider commercial and sustainability team
- Delivery of the published MoJ SME and VCSE Action Plan
- Promoting compliance with modern slavery policy to minimise the risk of modern slavery occurring in our supply chains
The Role:

The main purpose of this role is to support the team on the delivery and reporting of the Responsible Procurement four key areas of work.
This is a varied and busy roll within a small friendly team where you will be able use your organisational and project management skills to support a range of projects as MoJ continue to embed responsible procurement activity into all aspects of its commercial operations.
Key Responsibilities
The jobholder will be responsible for: -
- Working with the Responsible Procurement Lead/Manager to support further embedding of social, economic and environmental considerations across multiple projects.
- Monitoring and helping to report on responsible procurement related objectives/metrics.
- Engaging with commercial and contract management colleagues to collate, report/share RP outcomes achieved for dissemination.
- Managing internal and external engagement events.
- Managing the Modern Slavery Assessment Tool (MSAT) data analysis with the support of the Responsible Procurement Manager.
- Creating / managing responsible procurement communications in conjunction with the CCMD communications team.
- Maintaining, co-ordinating and updating responsible procurement content on the MoJ SharePoint/intranet.
- Managing the CCMD Social Value mailbox.
Experience
It is essential that the candidate has experience of supporting delivery of corporate social responsibility, social value or ESG. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is ready for their next long-term step.
- The ideal candidate will have strong stakeholder engagement skills to ensure they can work with individuals across a range of grades within CCMD.

- You will have a related qualification in CSR, responsible procurement or ESG.
- You will have a genuine interest in making a difference to communities through contributing to the implementation of socially responsible procurement policy.
