Do you have a passion for genomics and infectious diseases? Do you want to join a team of experts in characterising rare and emerging human pathogens? If so, you might be interested in applying for one of our scientific roles at UKHSA Porton Down.

As a research scientist in the Pathogen Characterisation group, you will work on developing and applying molecular methods to study the genomes of various pathogens of interest. You will use state-of-the-art technologies such as Illumina and Nanopore sequencing to generate high-quality genomic data. You will also collaborate with clinical and research colleagues to support our programmes in diagnostics, surveillance, and outbreak response.

You will need to have experience in molecular biology, preferably in viral or bacterial genomics. You will also need to be flexible, communicative, and effective in delivering scientific outcomes.

Job description

Responsibilities section:

The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

  • Implement and utilise a range of Next Generation Sequencing sample processing methods/assays/techniques in support of all activities associated with the project aimed to ensure project targets are met
  • Provide reports through analysis of data using software and databases as necessary, to meet project targets and for preparation of presentations and publications
  • Act as laboratory supervisor ensuring that equipment is suitably maintained and calibrated, and that documentation relevant to the laboratory is kept up to date
  • Take responsibility for the provision of reagents and consumables required for project area
  • Lead in laboratory supervision, ensuring appropriate equipment is available and calibrated
  • To perform any other duties required by the line manager commensurate with grade
  • To ensure all work is in accordance with applicable UKHSA Safety and Quality systems
  • To maintain health and safety competence
  • To fulfil the requirements of UKHSA Values and the Civil Service Code

Person specification

Essential Criteria:

It is important through your application and Statement of Suitability of 1000 words that you give evidence and examples of proven experience of each of the essential criteria (for full details of all essential criteria please refer to the attached job description):

Essential

  • BSc in an appropriate molecular biology-based field
  • Experience of Experience of one or more of the following:
    • Molecular biology
    • Virology
    • Bacteriology
    • Genomics
    • Sequencing
  • Good record keeping, attention to detail

Desirable

  • MSc or equivalent years’ experience in an appropriate molecular biology field
  • Experience of working in a regulated environment with quality systems and knowledge of UKAS or ISO quality standards
  • Previous experience in similar role in public sector
  • Experience of working at containment level 3
  • Experience of producing/ contributing to research publications

STAGE 1 - APPLICATION & SIFT: 

You will be required to complete an application form. This will be assessed in line with the full list of essential criteria as detailed in the attached job description – please do provide evidence of how you meet this. 

If you are successful at this stage, you will progress to an interview.

STAGE 2 – INTERVIEW 

This competition will involve a face to face interview. 

As part of the process, candidates will be invited to interview which will involve an in-depth discussion of your previous experience and professional competence in relation to the criteria set out in the Person Specification. 

Your Statement of Suitability should outline your skills, experience, and achievements, providing evidence of your suitability for the role, with reference to the essential criteria (outlined in the person specification section).

You will also be asked to provide information within the ‘Employer/ Activity history’ section of the application form. This is equivalent to the information you would provide on a CV, setting out your career history.
