About the job

Job summary

The AI Safety Institute is the first state-backed organisation focused on advanced AI safety for the public interest.  We launched at the AI Safety Summit because we believe taking responsible action on this extraordinary technology requires a capable and empowered group of technical experts within government.

Our staff includes senior alumni from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, start-ups and the UK government, and ML professors from Oxford and Cambridge.  We are now calling on the world’s top technical talent to build the institute from the ground up.  This is a truly unique opportunity to help shape AI safety at an international level.

We have ambitious goals and need to move fast.

Develop and conduct evaluations on advanced AI systems
We will characterise safety-relevant capabilities, understand the safety and security of systems, and assess their societal impacts.

Drive foundational AI safety research
We will launch moonshot research projects and convene world-class external researchers.

Facilitate information exchange
We will establish clear information-sharing channels between the Institute and other national and international actors. These include stakeholders such as policymakers and international partners.

Job description

About the Role

We are looking for a Research Scientist with strong experience in designing, implementing and analysing studies that measure human behaviour.  At AISI, our research focuses on AI safety, so the post-holder will be involved in experimentation that measures the positive and negative impacts of AI systems on individuals and groups.

These could be psychological impacts, related to mental health (e.g. does interacting with models change mood or levels of anxiety) as well as epistemic health (are people more likely to believe fake news or subscribe to conspiracy theories after interacting with the models).

We are also very interested in how advanced AI systems may enhance human capabilities, especially in domains where this uplift may have dangerous consequences (e.g. biosecurity or cybersecurity).

The ideal candidate will have good coding and quantitative skills and be comfortable collecting data via online platforms

Person specification

The ideal candidate will have excellent research skills, experience with designing human behavioural experiments and collecting and analysing human data, and AI research skills, including working with advanced AI models (such as LLMs).

Example duties on any given day could include:

  • Co-designing a new study or developing relevant analysis tools
  • Implementing new tasks in a relevant coding language
  • Recruiting & briefing new participants and/or graders who evaluate participant responses
  • Troubleshooting experiments before they are launched
  • Launching experiments online and monitoring their progress
  • Analysing the results of a study
  • Giving presentations about your findings to interested parties, or writing reports for internal or external dissemination

The ideal candidate will have skills and experience that allow them to:

  • Lead end-to-end design and implementation of high-quality data collection pipelines that evaluate advanced AI systems with a focus on safety, fairness, and beneficial outcomes
  • Carry out studies rigorously, ethically, safely, with both data quality and participant experience / wellbeing in mind
  • Identify improvements to our evaluation process, for example by debugging, simplifying workflows or building new analysis tools
  • Analyse data in ways that further research progress
  • Coordinate closely with research and engineering partners in your team to design new methods and build the instruments that enable high-quality data collection at scale, with a focus on AI alignment
  • Clearly communicate insights from studies to influence research decisions across stakeholders

Essential requirements for the role this include:

  • Significant experience with designing and running experiments that involve human data collection, for example from graduate-level study in cognitive or social sciences, or equivalent experience in an industry setting
  • Good coding skills in Python, JavaScript or an equivalent language
  • Experience with online collection of human behavioural data (e.g. Prolific Academic, Amazon Mechanical Turk, or an equivalent platform)
  • An understanding of the ethical and data protection issues associated with human experimentation (e.g. Research Ethics, GDPR)
  • Strong project management skills and demonstrable experience of teamwork, including building rapport with people from diverse backgrounds
  • An interest in working at the intersection of AI and the behavioural sciences, with a particular focus on advanced AI and its impact on people
  • Work autonomously and in a self-directed way with high agency, thriving in a constantly changing environment and a steadily growing team, while figuring out the best and most efficient ways to solve a particular problem
  • Bring your own voice and experience but also an eagerness to support your colleagues together with a willingness to do whatever is necessary for the team’s success and find new ways of getting things done within government
  • Have a sense of mission, urgency, and responsibility for success, demonstrating problem-solving abilities and preparedness to acquire any missing knowledge necessary to get the job done

Core Requirements

  • You should be able to spend at least 4 days per week on working with us
  • You should be able to join us for at least 12 months
  • You should be able work from our office in London (Whitehall) for parts of the week, but we provide flexibility for remote work

Benefits

Alongside your salary of £85,000, Department for Science, Innovation & Technology contributes £11,474 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Find out what benefits a Civil Service Pension provides.
