About Us

HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is responsible for the administration of criminal, civil and family courts and tribunals in England and Wales. Our roles support our service users and colleagues, where people and businesses access potentially life-changing justice.  We’re looking for individuals who are committed to public service and want to make a difference in people’s lives in delivering justice. If you’re interested in developing a career with a real purpose, please apply.

In 2021 HMCTS published its Data Strategy setting out its ambitions to become a truly data-driven organisation. The Data, Analysis and Insight (DAI) team plays a key role in making HMCTS a data driven organisation. We are a team of 75 data engineers, analysts and data access specialists who provide HMCTS and the Judiciary with timely, accurate and accessible operational management information and analysis that underpins strategic and operational decisions and Reform activities.  To support this, we are currently migrating the data from numerous HMCTS case management systems into a new Azure cloud-based platform, referred to as the Strategic Data Platform. This new platform has already transformed the way we work together, how we work with data and enabled us to add more value than ever to the organisation and the public.

Roles Available

Modelling and Forecasting Team

The Modelling & Forecasting Team provides HMCTS with a centre of expertise around modelling and forecasting, supporting strategic planning, performance modelling, implementation of new policies and judicial resourcing as well as carrying our bespoke analysis to support this work and provide greater insight into key issues impacting HMCTS.

Post 1 and 2: Lead Tribunals Modelling Analyst and Lead Judicial Modelling Analyst

The Tribunals Modelling team develop and maintain a set of demand and judicial resourcing and forecast models covering Tribunals. Our models aim to map resource against demand and estimate the impact on performance to support business planning. We rely on regular direct engagement with other government Department partners, internal stakeholders and the judiciary to inform our work. We also work alongside analysts within the MoJ family to ensure their models and forecasts include operational input from HMCTS and acting as expert customers so that they meet our requirements.

One priority area for the team is supporting the Immigration and Asylum Chamber to plan for and respond to demand arising from the Illegal Migration Act, working with colleagues from across the MoJ family and the Home Office.

The Judicial Modelling team focuses on modelling to support judicial recruitment, an essential element to support the running of the justice system. This team uses a combination of both short-term and longer-term models across all jurisdictions and involves working with the Judiciary, Judicial Policy and Judicial Workforce strategy.

Current challenges across both teams include migrating our models to utilise new MI data sources and to generate new insights and innovative approaches in line with availability of greater depths of information and opportunities from our new data platform.

Reporting and Analytics Team

The Reporting & Analytics Team aim is to provide timely management information (MI) to Jurisdictional Service Owners (Deputy Directors), Service Managers, operational teams, judicial staff and judges.

Post 3: Cross-cutting and Family Team Lead Data Analyst

This post will deliver MI primarily through the development of Power BI dashboards working closely with the Jurisdictional Service Owners and Service Managers, supporting the delivery of DAI’s MI Delivery Plan and the new HMCTS Dashboard Strategy. Lead Data Analysts would also lead on bespoke/deep-dive pieces of analysis to deliver additional insights and understand the data in detail, including identifying and working with colleagues to address data quality risks and issues.

The successful candidate must already be or are eligible to be a member of an Analytical Profession (for example Government Operational Research Service (GORS), Government Statistical Service (GSS), Government Economic Service (GES), or Digital, Data and Technology (DDAT)).
