About the Parole Board:

The Parole Board is an independent court-like body that carries out risk assessments on prisoners to determine whether they can be safely released into the community We do that with great care and public safety is our number one priority.  

All Parole Board decisions are solely focused on whether a prisoner would represent a significant risk to the public after release.  Not all decisions Members make are popular, but they make these decisions fairly and objectively.

The Board is made up of about 190 members of secretariat staff based in our London Head Office and approximately 280 Members who make decisions on risk and hold hearings at prisons around the country.  

The Parole Board is an executive non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Ministry of Justice. Staff who work for the Parole Board Secretariat are Public Servants and not Civil Servants.

About the role:

An exciting opportunity has opened to be part of the Reconsideration Team within the Legal Hub at the Parole Board. We are a team with an important role to play in delivering the Transparency agenda to which the Parole Board has committed which includes the production and delivery of Reconsideration Decisions.

This is a fast-paced and interesting role, with responsibility for reconsideration of our decisions. This means the team carries an important responsibility to be accurate and sensitive in the way it produces reconsideration decisions as well as their supporting communication.

This is an evolving area of work and requires individuals to work effectively within the organisation, and with stakeholders, to ensure this process is workable and fully compliant with the law.

Person specification:

You will be required to manage the functional element of the reconsideration process, communicating effectively with the Team Leader and stakeholders and work well within a team. You will need to analyse complex information and make decisions based upon this, following a clear legal framework. Escalation processes will need to be followed precisely, and anomalies highlighted immediately.

It will be imperative that you are able to communicate effectively with, a diverse range of individuals, at varying grades, with competing demands for how this process functions and produces.

Main Duties:

  • To effectively case manage Parole Board reconsideration applications as allocated by Team Leader;
  • Monitor and input into the Parole Board case management systems;
  • Advise stakeholders of reconsideration process and criteria, by responding to queries as allocated by Team Leader;
  • Send correspondence to necessary parties;
  • Ensure all reconsideration decisions are provided in line with policy and guidance and to agreed timescales and quality standards.

General:

  • Assist Team Leader and/or Team Manager;
  • Other tasks appropriate to the role as assigned by Team Leader.
  • Attend national and regional meetings and events which may require occasional travel and overnight stays.

Experience required for the post:

  • Experience in using Microsoft programmes
  • Ability to work well within a team
  • Adaptable to change
  • Ability to follow processes, policies and guidelines
  • Be detail-focused and accurate
  • Accurate email communication and data entry skills (e.g. in Excel)
  • Experience in relaying complex information in a simple, digestible format at all levels – i.e. in order for stakeholders or service users to be able to easily understand
