About the job

Job summary

The Parliamentary Maintenance Team serves both the House of Commons & House of Lords carrying out reactive maintenance requests on the Parliamentary Estate.

The in-house Reactive maintenance team consist of some 45 craft persons and assistants ranging from electricians and plumbers to upholsterers and locksmiths etc who provide a day to day reactive repair service across the estate.

The team also provides support for large ceremonial events such as State Opening of Parliament.

Job description

You will manage a team of trades and craft assistants dealing with reactive works and helping to maintain our grade one listed buildings and UNESCO world heritage site as well as all the other buildings that make up the parliamentary estate. You will effectively communicate to all stake holder to keep them fully informed of progress and proactively manage customers’ expectations when timelines are at risk. This role will be based on the Parliamentary estate in Westminster.

Some of the responsibilities for this role include:

  • Allocate work to staff and contractors to ensure efficient use of resources is achieved.
  • Monitor work completion for safety, quality, timelines and value for money.
  • provide feedback to team members to promote a culture of safe working.
  • Carry out tool box talks and inspections of facilities, and action findings to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Lead training and development within your team to ensure all statutory training is completed in a timely manner.

Person specification

To be successful in this role you will demonstrate:

Criterion 1

NVQ Level 3 in a building maintenance discipline or equivalent.

 

Criterion 2 - Ability to manage reactive maintenance services

Experience of:

  • Working on a large estate
  • Working in listed buildings
  • Managing a team of trades persons
  • Planning work to use resources effectively

Understanding of:

  • Methods/constraints when working in a building that is occupied
  • The issues when working on listed buildings
  • Techniques used to maintain a building
  • Abel to use information technology to communicate, measure and allocate resources.

 

Criterion 3 - Good communications skills

Experience of:

  • Relating to team members and customers whilst upholding the values of equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Communicating ideas to stake holders to resolve problems with a broad range of people at all levels.
  • Able to use information technology to communicate by e mail and basic use of office software along with an ability to learn to use bespoke software to record work completed during the working day.

Understanding of:

  • Of the importance of having good communications within a team and its impact on the team’s performance and the customers perceptions of the Reactive maintenance team.
  • How good communications can impact on the outcome of work completed
  • Information technology

 

Criterion 4 - Understanding of health and safety and its impact on the role

Experience of:

  • Working safely
  • Maintaining a safe working environment

  • Manual handling

Understanding of:

  • Legislation relating to health and safety
  • How health and safety contribute to the working environment

  • Coach and develop individuals and teams drive continuous improvement

  • Manage and plan workforce development in the long and short term

Understanding of:

  • Data and its role in management

  • Planning both short term, medium and long term.
