Job summary

We are JCG (Joint Cyber Group part of the Ministry of Defence). We manage a vast range of projects to support our work and colleagues across our subject area and locations. Our work is critical to UK Defence, and our people are our greatest asset in achieving this outcome. 

JCG are looking for a junior or newly qualified project manager with excellent communication skills that can work within and adapt to our changing circumstances and environments.  

The role requires a detail orientated person who is enthusiastic about building upon their career to become a professional project manager.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Strategic Command is going through a significant transformation programme which aims to improve the way the Command conducts its business and delivers for Defence and the nation. As a consequence of this, all posts within Strategic Command Headquarters and in time the wider organisation, are/will be subject to review and potential changes as we continuously improve across the period of the transformation programme. These changes may be minor or could be more substantive and will generate new opportunities.  Throughout, the Command’s transformation programme is committed to following the MOD’s framework on managing and supporting people through the change process and places an emphasis on early and open consultation and engagement with the Command’s personnel and Trade Unions.


Job description

The role will be a part of our portfolio team, which provides oversight of delivery throughout JCG overseeing the entire portfolio. You will work with other JCG project managers and form part of a vital assurance role for the organisation. 

The role will encompass the delivery of projects using recognised project management methodologies, tools and techniques. In addition, you will provide project support for larger projects and programmes and assist your portfolio colleagues when appropriate.

Person specification

We are looking for an individual who can build upon their existing experience and grow into the role. Some project management experience is an advantage; working within environments where you are familiar with project management, customer engagement, change and risk management and business operations, but the ability to progress in this subject area is essential.  

Responsibilities will include:  

  • Coordinate multi-disciplinary teams in managing and running one or more projects. 
  • Develop, maintain and control all relevant project documentation from project plans, highlight reports and risk registers to deliver specific project outputs within an established baseline. 
  • Reporting on progress via monthly reporting, explaining any deviations and recommending corrective action 
  • Identify project risks, assumptions, issues and dependencies. 
  • Build relationships and manage customer’s expectations

Candidates will be required to complete an online Numerical and Verbal test.

The Civil Service Judgement Test is not bankable and therefore must be taken on every vacancy where it is applied.

Candidates that reach the minimum required pass mark will have their results saved as a banked score against the following tests:

  • New Civil Service Verbal Test
  • New Civil Service Numerical Test

When a candidate has a banked score they’re not asked to re-take the same test providing it is set at the same level. Scores will be banked for a 6 month period from the date of test completion. If a candidate is invited to take the same test against multiple vacancies, the banked score will be recognised against all vacancies and all active applications will progress.

 CSJT scores cannot be banked as each test is generated from the behaviours required for a specific role which will vary between recruitment campaigns.

The recruitment process will be over two stages. The first stage is a sift, this identifies applicants who appear to be best suited to the role’s requirements from the information provided on the application form. Those who are successful at the sift stage will be invited to the next stage, which will be interview.
