Job summary

The Programme Management Office Head will provide oversight and management of projects within the Transformation Programme. With a headmark of 2030, has been underway for ~ 18 months and consists of a high level vision and 8 core objective covering a wider range of activity, from training delivery, learning technology, digital requirements, infrastructure changes, and organisational changes.

PMO Head responsibility includes the implementation and sharing of best practice as well as the development and application of project procedures, tools and techniques in order to standardise methodologies and realise economies.  The PMO Hd provides expert guidance, support and insight on the programme and projects, and acts as the source of all programme and project information and metrics.

PMO Head will work in a small team of (< 10) Civil Servants within the wider, tight-knit Head Quarter of Defence Intelligence Training Group, based at one of the main Defence Intelligence sites, UKSC Chicksands. Transformation Projects include all Executive areas of the Training Group (i.e. Digital, Training Providers/Schools, Training Development, Infrastructure etc.), so the PMO Head will be involved with people in all areas of delivery and suppor

Strategic Command is going through a significant transformation programme which aims to improve the way the Command conducts its business and delivers for Defence and the nation. As a consequence of this, all posts within Strategic Command Headquarters and in time the wider organisation, are/will be subject to review and potential changes as we continuously improve across the period of the transformation programme. These changes may be minor or could be more substantive and will generate new opportunities.  Throughout, the Command’s transformation programme is committed to following the MOD’s framework on managing and supporting people through the change process and places an emphasis on early and open consultation and engagement with the Command’s personnel and Trade Unions.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.


Job description

Core activity will include: 

  • Translate Programme aspirations into actionable projects and support Project Managers in delivering.
  • Provide leadership and management to the Programme Management Office. 
  • Compile and report Programme level Risks, Benefits and Assumptions.
  • Overseeing multiple Projects and providing written updates and other Secretariat activity to the Programme Governance structure. 
  • Supporting the Commander of Defence Intelligence Training Group and other Executive areas to deliver transformation alongside Business-as-Usual.
  • Potential to Line Manager a small number of Civil Servants.  
  • Building strong working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders ranging from training delivery staff to DI senior leadership. 
  • Understand the bigger picture of Defence Intelligence transformation, including infrastructure changes, and translating the implications for training and education.
  • Support communication and change management activity related to transformation and be a central point of contact for other Executive areas to understand Projects. 
  • Developing project Business Cases and managing project resources. 
  • Traveling to other site in DI and Defence to meet with stakeholders.
