Job description

Role outline 

The new PPU Apprenticeship role offers an exciting opportunity to work in the heart of government whilst completing a 24 month, Level 4 qualification in Project Management. This is a work-based qualification and learning will be gained through a combination of project (‘on the job’) and academic based tasks. This will involve directly supporting the delivery of a range of important, consequential and historic government policy, with 20% allocated learning time per week. 

Who is an apprenticeship for? 

Professional apprenticeships are for people from a wide range of backgrounds. This includes those looking to start their civil service career,returning to work after a break, or looking to change career direction. Professional apprenticeships are for people of all ages, grades and stages in their career. You will have the opportunity to work towards a genuine, academically robust qualification that will be fully funded by the Cabinet Office.

Why an apprenticeship in project management?

Project managers learn many highly transferable skills that are essential to delivering a wide variety of projects in a fast paced environment. For example, project managers need good planning, organisation, leadership, management and communication skills; as well as an ability to utilise resources, think creatively, and facilitate effective team working. Whether you are interested in a career as a project manager or not, the successful candidate will develop the tools necessary to pursue career opportunities in the Cabinet Office and across the Civil Service. 

What are we offering? 

The successful candidate will divide their time between: 

  • Working on (typically) three month long projects across Cabinet Office (70%);
  • Working towards a Level-4 professional qualification in project management (20%); and, 
  • Championing PPU areas and team projects, providing opportunities to help shape the team and encourage an inclusive, diverse environment (10%)

The successful candidate will also have access to the core civil service offer (mandatory for all CO staff). 

To make all this possible, you will be supported by :

  • A line manager within PPU who focuses on wellbeing and career development;
  • A project task manager who will oversee the expectations of your current placement; and, 
  • A digital support coach (assigned by the qualification provider) to support course learning and completion.

You will also be linked up with an existing PPU team member as part of the PPU buddy system aimed at supporting new joiners to get settled into the team. 

We can also offer a range of flexible working arrangements that will be agreed with successful candidates on a case-by-case basis before the start of employment. Successful candidates will be required to work in offices for a minimum of three days per week.

Alongside working towards a 24 month work-based qualification in project management, the successful candidate will be placed on (typically) three-month projects with teams across the Cabinet Office. These placements can be both individual or alongside other PPU members at different grades. We aim to meet the changing business needs and priorities of the department, while providing team members with the best opportunities for individual development.

What are my responsibilities?

Each project and its demands are unique but frequently PPU team members are requested to work on complex, cross-cutting areas of work; significant policy, delivery and analysis reviews; short term problem solving with policy teams on urgent issues; project management to establish programmes; and working with Ministers. This may be within the Cabinet office or across departments. 

Within projects you will be expected to:

  • Identify objectives and learn the work of the team and policy area;
  • Take responsibility for a set of high priority objectives, and drive them through to completion. 
  • Be an ambassador for PPU. 

To be successful in this role, you will have the drive to develop the ability to:

  • Adapt to new priorities and work areas, without understanding all the detail; 
  • Identify problems and proactively provide solutions;
  • Effectively communicate key messages to Senior Civil Servants and Ministers;
  • Design and implement effective planning;
  • Work with colleagues across government to achieve priority objectives;
  • Think through difficult policy problems; and,
  • Deliver projects quickly, over a short time-frame. 

      Data and digital skills are an increasingly important part of operating successfully in PPU. We offer training to make sure everyone in the unit has a good understanding of the fundamentals. We would especially welcome your application if you have data and digital experience.

      Eligibility

      To be eligible to apply for an apprenticeship, you must:

      • Not be in full-time education;
      • Have the right to live and work in the UK – if you are an EEA citizen you must have  (or have eligibility for) status under the EYES
      • Undertake only one apprenticeship at any one time;
      • Be employed on a full-time basis for the duration of the course; 
      • Not have completed the same level/subject area of qualification before.

           Qualification requirements 

      • Have completed 5 GCSEs, including English and Maths at Grade 4 (C) or above. 
      • Hold a level 3 qualification in a relevant subject (examples of level 3 qualifications can be found here). Or alternatively,  have current/previous work experience in a role that requires the use of relevant, transferable skills. 
      • Experience with using Excel and Microsoft products (or similar) is desirable, however learning courses will be available to support you to develop these skills. 

      Please note that you can undertake an apprenticeship at a lower level than a qualification that you already hold. However, this cannot be in the same subject.

      Written application stage
