Job summary

We are currently looking for a Principal Scientist to join our Diagnostics Team within the Science, Research & Innovation group, to work on an exciting project addressing the global challenge of anti-microbial resistance.

This is a full-time opportunity, on a fixed term contract basis until 31st March 2027. The role will be lab-based in South Mimms, Hertfordshire. Please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas.

The Science, Research and Innovation Group delivers public health impact, world-leading research innovation, and a unique regulatory proposition for patients and users via an ambitious Science Strategy which will balance innovation against sustainability and affordability. It is divided into 6 sub-Groups, Innovation Accelerator, Clinical Investigations and Trials, Research and Development, Standards Lifecycle, Control Testing and Quality Assurance and Health & Safety.

 

The Diagnostics Team in Research and Development undertake regulatory scientific research activities that guides the development of reference materials that are used to assess the analytical performance of complex diagnostic assays for infectious and neurodegenerative diseases, cancer genomics, and anti-microbial resistance.

 

What’s the role?

This is a new post, funded by DHSC GAMRIF, to establish and lead a small team developing physical and documentary standards that will guide innovators and regulators, and accelerate patient access to novel biologicals and diagnostics that address the global challenge of anti-microbial resistance.

Job description

-          Lead the team funded by DHSC GAMRIF, including the line management of two SEO Senior Scientists

 

-          Initiate and lead R&D projects that address key regulatory and scientific questions pertaining to novel AMR medicines and diagnostics, including securing external funding to establish and lead national and international collaborative work activities addressing the accelerated regulatory approval of novel and important medicines.

 

-          Establish and maintain relationships and collaborations with external stakeholders (including industry, academia, government departments, regulatory agencies and non-profit philanthropic organisations) as appropriate to identify and progress research priorities to deliver outputs that positively impact health of patients.

 

-          Provide expert scientific advice on the regulation and standardisation of assays and therapeutic products relating to the AMR to colleagues in the Agency and other Government departments as appropriate.

Person specification

Our successful candidate will have: 

 

-          A Ph.D. or equivalent with significant post-doctoral research experience and evidence of collaborative, multidisciplinary working.

 

-          Extensive experience in experimental design, biological standardisation, assay development

 

-          Experience of engaging with external stakeholders and partners to promote knowledge exchange and build productive relationships.

 

-          A good knowledge of, and practical experience in, a broad range of laboratory techniques used to assess and characterise biological molecules and biotherapeutics.
