The Digital Markets Unit has been established to promote greater competition and innovation in digital markets, for the benefit of consumers and people. Our work focuses on some of the most important digital markets used by consumers and business in the UK, like online search, social media, app stores and online marketplaces.

We are also recruiting to the position of Principal Adviser, Digital Markets for which you are required to make a separate application.

The Digital Markets Unit (DMU) will host a drop-in session for prospective candidates interested in working for the CMA. Candidates are invited to join a virtual session where the team will explain the work of the DMU and you can hear from existing team members about their experiences. Job description

The successful candidate will work closely with key teams and stakeholders within the DMU as well as a range of colleagues across other areas of the CMA.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Leading and/or project managing the Programme Office workstreams within the Digital Markets Unit, ensuring that work is delivered to timeframes, including identifying, managing and escalating risks (for example, in relation to DMU wide learning and digital transformation needs, or internal governance and reporting).
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with relevant teams across the CMA, including the central Programme Management Office and CMA Academy to support effective project delivery and team capacity building.  
  • Ensuring adherence to the DMU’s internal governance processes, including overseeing business continuity planning and relevant reporting to senior decision makers within the CMA.  
  • Managing the DMU’s risk register, including routine monitoring, assessment and escalation of relevant risks to the DMU senior management team as required.
  • Leading the review and improvement of recommended processes and knowledge-capture to improve our efficiency and maximise our learnings across different pieces of work, including maintaining and updating our DMU Internal Handbook.
  • Responsibility for monitoring and reporting on overall DMU team resource allocation to ensure that each of the teams in the DMU are resourced with consideration to strategic priority and resource needs.  

Wider Responsibilities

  • Line and work management responsibility for members of the Digital Markets Unit, supporting individual development and providing timely feedback.
  • Contribute to the overall development of the DMU and ensure that best practice and knowledge is shared within the DMU.

Person specification

  • Experience successfully delivering projects to challenging timescales, providing strategic direction, recommending change, problem solving and keeping track of progress to ensure quality outcomes (lead criteria).
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to develop strategic relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including those from other professional backgrounds (lead criteria).
  • Strong communication skills and proven ability to influence and collaborate with colleagues and senior decision-makers, tailoring communications appropriately and securing buy-in to ideas
  • Experience of developing recommendations, drawing on analysis of a wide range of information and identifying and communicating key risks.

Desirable:

  • An interest in and/or prior experience managing process change across a team or organisation.

Selection process details

The selection process will comprise of the sift (application review) and an interview which may include an assessment. 

An initial sift based on lead criteria 1 and 2 may be held if a large number of applications are received.

    The sift will take place week commencing 17 June 2024. 

    If your application is successful, you will be invited to attend an interview. You will be notified via email to log-in to your Civil Service Account and book your interview slot. You will be sent an email with full details of your arrangements for interview.

    Interviews will be held week commencing 1 July 2024. There is 1 interview stage for this role.

    The interview will be a 45-60 minute panel interview where you will be asked questions based on the Behaviours and Experience outlined in the role profile.

    The first part of interview will comprise of a presentation or written assessment, the topic of which will be shared with you should you be selected for an interview and advance preparation may be required.
