Job description

This is a really exciting time to join the Marine Management Organisation (MMO). The UK is now an independent coastal state, and as the lead marine regulator for England, MMO is embedding new repatriated functions and services with an increased focus on the protection and enhancing of the marine environment.

The MMO is an executive non-departmental public body of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Driven by government’s aim for clean, healthy, safe, productive and biologically diverse oceans and seas, MMO’s purpose is to protect and enhance our precious marine environment and support UK economic growth by enabling sustainable marine activities and development.

We are the independent regulator for England’s seas, professionally delivering service-focussed outcomes for our customers.

We are a team of around 500 people and combine our Newcastle upon Tyne and London operations with a local presence around the English coastline in Brixham, Beverley, Harwich, Hastings, Lowestoft, North Shields, Hayle, Plymouth, Poole, Portsmouth, Preston, Scarborough, Shoreham, Whitehaven.

Job description

This role sits within the Marine Conservation Team and will help deliver the MMO’s Strategic Goal 1: Work with partners to restore functioning marine ecosystems introducing increased levels of protection and improvement to our marine environment.

The role leads the assessment and management of the impacts of fishing on English offshore marine protected areas (MPAs) for harbour porpoise and marine birds. This includes:

  • Leading a small but highly effective and committed team to produce clear and robust assessments of the impacts of fishing on harbour porpoise or relevant bird species.
  • Work with partners within and beyond government to develop and implement management measures to ensure effective protection is in place for our harbour porpoise and marine bird MPAs.
  • Contribute to MMO’s assessment and management of the impacts of fishing on seabed habitats and species in England’s offshore MPAs.
