MMO has a responsibility for regulating English waters, therefore this role can be located in any Defra Group office in England, subject to capacity. You will be asked to express a preference during your application, please note your first preference is not guaranteed. There may be requirement to undertake induction and training in Newcastle at the start of the appointment. How that will be delivered can be discussed with the successful candidate.
MMO Offices include Alnwick, Brixham, Beverley, Harwich, Hastings, London, Lowestoft, Newcastle, North Shields, Hayle, Plymouth, Poole, Portsmouth, Preston, Scarborough, Shoreham, Whitehaven and York.
Job description
This is a really exciting time to join the MMO as we are now independent coastal state, embedding new repatriated functions and services with an increased focus on the protection and enhancing of the marine environment. The Principal Fisheries Manager role will be central to delivering critical aspects of the Government’s ambitions for sustainable fisheries in England.
The UK government has an objective to develop fisheries management plans (FMPs). These are a key requirement of the Fisheries Act, and FMPs will form the basis of future UK fisheries management. The focus of this role will be to lead on implementing the management measures outlined in the first round of FMPs to be published. As fisheries in England evolve the position holder may lead on other elements of fisheries management. These include, but are not limited to:
Non-quota species management
Quota management
Domestic, foreign, and external waters fishing vessel licensing
Producer organisation compliance
Stakeholder engagement coordination
The Fisheries Management Team at MMO flexes responsibilities to manage workload, as demand from industry and policy changes. You will work closely with others in the team, internal MMO leaders, external delivery partners and the fisheries industry. You and the four other Principal Fisheries Managers will play an active leadership role in the Fisheries Management Team. You will manage up to three HEO colleagues.
You will be responsible for reporting to senior managers through various Governance Boards, on the progress of your fisheries portfolio.
