In this critical role, you’ll join our supportive and experienced Azure function, delivering cloud and hybrid solutions across compute, network, storage and security. Not only will you have the chance to shape the infrastructure of a leading regulatory body, but you’ll be helping us carry out our vital work more efficiently than ever, in turn helping the government reach its ambitious net zero targets.

You’ll be the principal infrastructure engineer for our cloud platform. Leading on cloud migration, you’ll install, configure and monitor cloud services, working with leading-edge technology across numerous projects. You’ll also develop Azure-based documentation, troubleshoot Azure builds and create frameworks for our IT and infrastructure teams. Beyond this, we’ll look to you to drive the standardisation of enterprise cloud integration and application development.

You’ll also develop the strategic and tactical engineering roadmaps for the technology and services in your remit. There are also opportunities to lead and direct our infrastructure specialist teams. To join us, you’ll need considerable experience in leading IT operations, including networking, virtualisation, identity, business continuity and disaster recovery. Experience in designing Azure infrastructure solutions is also essential, and you’ll have expertise in Azure AD, IaaS, containers, storage, networking and Azure Security.

Excellent communication and project management skills are important, combined with skills in systems design, integration, testing and troubleshooting. We’re also looking for a sound knowledge of cloud security.

We are building a Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) driven organisation at Ofgem and will lead industry by showcasing best practice when dealing with data, digital and technology in the energy sector. Our more modern, insight-driven, innovative approach to DDaT will provide outstanding experiences at the right cost, quality and pace for the whole of Ofgem and ensure consumers receive a top-quality and cost-effective supply of energy

Key Responsibilities

  • Partnering with stakeholders to design and implement the Azure hosted portions of our products. This will be done leveraging Infrastructure as Code (IAC)Manage Azure key management services to ensure robust cryptographic key security
  • Hands on design and configuration of the Microsoft Azure Cloud (e.g IAAS, PAAS, Idientity and Authentication, AKS)
  • In depth configuration and development of Azure resources using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/ARM)
  • Providing Overall Azure expertise to the team and our Software Development Teams
  • Troubleshoot complex escalations and the ability to learn new skills/technologies
  • Leading and communicating insights and best practices with peers and stakeholders on these service improvements.
  • Documenting Azure Cloud for information and security purposes
  • Helping leverage AI to automate and streamline activities

Key Outputs and Deliverables

  • Lead and work within CDIO function to refresh, design, build, and operate our Azure Cloud solutions and environments
  • Design and implement cloud-based solutions using Azure services such as App Services, Functions, and Logic Apps
  • Monitor and troubleshoot cloud-based applications and services, automate cloud-based deployments using Azure DevOps
  • Provide technical administration for the Continuity of Operations/Disaster Recovery architecture and planning
  • Technical knowledge of Microsoft Azure and On-Prem infrastructure components and how they integrate with one another
  • Provide documentation and resources to colleagues across Information Services, ensuring that all services are fully supported, and end users have access to appropriate technical support and information
  • Be the primary technical lead for issues related to Cloud environment

Person specification

  • You should have a deep understanding of the Azure platform, services, and features, such as Azure Compute, Azure Storage, and Azure Networking. Knowledge about implementing, managing, and monitoring identity, governance, and compliance features in Azure is also beneficial
  • DevOps Practices: Familiarity with DevOps principles and tools like Azure DevOps, Github, Jenkins, Chef, and Puppet can be vital as Azure engineers often work in environments that follow DevOps practices. Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code (IaC) also forms an important part of this skill set.
  • Programming Skills: You will often need to write scripts to automate tasks, so proficiency in a programming language such as Python, JavaScript or PowerShell is essential
  • Cloud Security – you need to be knowledgeable about protecting information and systems in the cloud. This can include understanding how to configure security protocols, manage security services, and adhere to compliance regulations within the Azure environment
  • Networking: Azure engineers design, implement and manage Azure Networking. You would need to have a good understanding of network principles and the Azure networking services.
