Job description

This is an exciting role working on the development of policy interventions that enables the deployment of self-driving vehicles on Great Britain’s roads, through appropriate legislative measures in the AV Act. The post holder will develop an understanding of the potential implications of legislative and non-legislative requirements for the Incident Investigation and Safe Use policy, building collaboration across a range of stakeholders, and create evidence-based policy interventions to meet intended outcomes and objectives.

The post holder will need to develop close working relationships with teams across government and within DfT, including legal, policy teams working on self-driving vehicles, International Vehicle Standards (IVS), Strategic Roads and Freight, and ministerial private offices. The post holder will also build productive working relationships with external stakeholders, including throughout the road safety and policing communities.

Responsibilities

Key accountabilities of the role include:

  • Provide policy support to the Incident Investigation and Safe Use policy areas.
  • Collaborate with researchers, analysts and policy leads to conduct qualitative and quantitative research, as well as desk-based research.
  • Support the implementation of policies related to Incident Investigation and Safe Use.
  • Support the drafting and preparation of policy documents.
  • Coordinate stakeholder engagement and activities, including organising meetings, preparing briefing materials, and capturing feedback from internal and external stakeholders to inform policy development processes.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across departments and teams to ensure alignment and coordination in policy development and implementation.
  • Provide administrative support to the whole team, including scheduling meetings, managing calendars, organising events, and performing other tasks as needed to support the efficient operation of the policy and delivery function.
  • Grasp the opportunity for professional development to build knowledge and skills in policy development and implementation.

Person specification

To be successful in this role, you will have excellent relationship building skills which you will use to work across a diverse range of stakeholders including those within the industry and international stakeholders. You will use your collaboration skills to help achieve policy objectives.

You will have policy experience and will use this to provide advice and support the Incident Investigation and Safe Use policy areas. You are organised and have the ability to deliver to tight deadlines in complex and changing environments.

Additional Information

A minimum 60% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance. 

Occasional travel to other DfT offices will be required.
