The Team

This specific role is in the West Midlands area team, which covers a large and diverse area ranging from Staffordshire and Shropshire in the north, down through Birmingham and the Black Country, to the rural environment of Herefordshire, also including Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire. 

Our team vision is for ‘Big green connected areas, with thriving wildlife, and people enjoying it, forever’. Our priority projects focus on heathland recovery in the Cannock Chase area, the headwaters of our main rivers, and upland and lowland peatlands.  We also work with partners and through the planning system to alleviate recreational pressure in the places like the Severn Vale; and deliver projects working connecting people with nature in and around Birmingham and other areas.

Job description

Natural England’s team leaders are vital to the smooth running of the team and organisation, providing leadership and support for team members’ and translating team or organisational priorities into day-to-day work programmes for teams. Team leaders support and develop our people, striving to ensure a fulfilling work life and a heathy work-life balance for all. 

This particular role will provide inspirational leadership and line management, principally for staff delivering our planning advice and our health and people engagement work (the actual staff roles can vary).  You will have the following responsibilities:

  • Role model and lead with strong communication skills, adopting an inclusive approach.
  • Develop and continuously improve team performance through motivational use of the People Performance framework, encouraging personal development, and addressing and resolving any poor performance. 
  • Create a supportive culture that enables all Team members to innovate, take risks, and show creativity in the way they deliver, and to reflect, review and learn lessons from their work.  Build a culture of seeking out opportunities that develop the Team’s commercial income whilst also delivering more for the environment. 
  • Provide leadership and proactively support team members dealing with difficult casework or project issues, signposting to the most effective person to advise. Escalate awareness of major risks and engage other’s skills within Natural England to help achieve resolution.  
  • Sustain a culture focused on the positive wellbeing and morale of staff. Proactively deal with complex and contentious issues relating to people, including signposting staff to appropriate support mechanisms within Natural England.

Locations

Natural England is adopting hybrid working – which means our staff work from a flexible range of locations, encompassing home, offices (ours and our partners) and relevant sites. 

The post holder will be associated with one of the West Midlands offices, Telford or Worcester. Full time staff are expected to attend their associated office for a minimum of one day a week and to travel across the area to meet staff. 

Staff members are required to carry out all their duties working in this way and cannot do so from an overseas location at any time. Travel expenses will be paid if work related travel is required but does not apply to travel between home and your associated office.
