Job description

The Performance and Training Manager will support the strategic direction of the unit, and ensure that high quality, operational products are able to be provided to investigators. 

They will support SCAS in the achievement of its objectives by ensuring the optimum performance of unit staff by co-ordinating an effective training programme, reviewing and assessing individual and unit performance, and identifying and implementing any necessary improvements to working practices.

Main Responsibilities include:

  • To ensure the optimum performance of SCAS operational staff by maintaining an effective and comprehensive development programme for the enhancement of their job related skills. Co-ordinate all personal development and training requests and activities for operational staff, ensuring value for money, consistency of opportunity and minimising resource demands.
  • To monitor, accurately assess and evaluate the performance of operational staff, both as individuals and collectively, and to support line managers in implementing  appropriate action plans for those areas where performance is above or below acceptable standards. Establish suitable strategies to address future problems.
  • To identify strategies for development and professionalisation, acting to minimise skills gaps across the workforce. Anticipate future needs of staff and support them to recognise and reach their full potential. Encourage and assist individuals to broaden their skills and take initiatives through managed development opportunities.
  • To develop and maintain contact with a variety of stakeholders both internally and externally, often at senior levels, in order to develop and facilitate effective and productive training processes.
  • To identify and implement improvements in relation to performance and training that would benefit the strategic direction and visibility of the unit.
  • To be responsible for line management of Crime Indexers, and on occasion Crime Analysts.
  • Manage project development identified by Principal Analysts, ensuring timescales and resource allocations are fulfilled and liaising with any other departments involved. To act as project manager (when directed by Principal Analyst) and develop/implement key improvements; to include requirement identification, testing processes and project evaluation. In addition, have responsibility for the dissemination of project results.
