Job description

This is an opportunity to join the Air & Space Warfare Centre (ASWC) EME team as an Operational Analyst/Operations Researcher working on Electro-Magnetic Environment (EME) topics, ranging from GPS navigation resiliency to communications performance.

The ASWC Operational Analysis Element (OAE) provides high quality, impartial and operationally-focussed scientific, analytical and technical advice to enhance the warfighting capability of all elements of UK air and space power.

Your role as an Operational Analyst/Operations Researcher, working within the OAE and ASWC military colleagues, will be to further understand and define current and future EME analytical support requirements and to implement solutions to enable this emerging capability to develop. You will be given every opportunity to grow your understanding of wider EME activities across defence. You will be expected to consistently use good scientific practice and appropriate analytical and statistical techniques to provide analysis products and advice directly to the military customer to answer real-life operational questions. This may require the development of innovative analytical tools, or liaison with other defence organisations to exploit pre-existing toolsets and/or data.

This is an excellent opportunity to directly support the RAF in achieving effective delivery of air and space capability in UK operations, whilst also shaping the future of analytical support and growing analytical capability within the EME domain.

Suitable general and specialist training opportunities will be provided to the successful candidate to enable them in the role. Development will include a variety of online courses, taught courses at the Air & Space Warfare School, such as multiple Electronic Warfare Courses, but also exposure to ongoing experimentation, trials and test activities.

Person specification

As an Operational Analyst supporting EME for the ASWC, you will

  • Understand and identify requirements and limitations of current and future analytical support to EME.
  • Use a range of suitable analytical and statistical techniques to answer real-life military questions about operating in and exploiting the EME.
  • Develop innovative analytical support concepts and tools to enhance the provision of EME advice.
  • Consistently provide robust and timely scientific evidence-based insights directly to the military decision makers through written reports and/or verbal presentations.
  • Develop a working knowledge of military EME systems and architectures.
  • Proactively network with the wider EME community, including industry and operators, to influence the evaluation strategy of future EME systems.
  • Identify and develop suitable internal and external data sources for use in EME evaluations.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of data processing toolsets.
  • Interpret, document, disseminate and brief findings to stakeholders.
