We’re looking for an exceptional Network Engineer - Industrial Placement 2024 to help us make a difference to our planet.

As our Network Engineer - Industrial Placement 2024 you will work a hybrid pattern and will be on site at Exeter HQ. The Networks Industrial Placement 2024 will work a hybrid pattern of homeworking and 2-3 days per week in Exeter HQ. Most of the Network Services Team attend Exeter HQ every day and we recommend regular Exeter HQ attendance for the best placement experience. You can choose to work more frequently in our state-of-the-art office if you'd prefer.

Job description

Job Purpose:

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Met Office on a 12-month Year In Industry placement, developing your skills and knowledge and ensuring you gain the most value possible from your experience with us. You will have the opportunity to network with our cohort of Industrial Placement all over the Met Office and understand what career opportunities we can offer you after you graduate.

As our Network Engineer - Industrial Placement 2024, you will work with cutting edge technology, helping to keep the Met Office connected and supporting our world-leading scientific capabilities. You will support, manage and develop the network and telephony infrastructure so the Met Office can provide services to its customers.

Responsibilities:

• Install, document, maintain and troubleshoot networking equipment.
• Assist in the supervision of network engineering works at Exeter HQ and remotely.
• Responding to and resolving incidents, investigating and diagnosing network problems and working with users, other technical staff and suppliers as appropriate.
• Implement changes as required by the business to meet the demands of systems delivery, including switch, load balancer and firewall configuration.
• The maintenance of local and wide area networks for the delivery of weather data and enterprise communications.
• Work closely with the lead network specialists and other IT experts within the Met Office.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:

To become a Networks Industrial Placement at the Met Office you will need to be someone who:

1. Is studying for an undergraduate degree with a significant networking/communications technologies element. (Expert by nature)
2. Has awareness of at least one programming/scripting language i.e Python, Powershell.
3. Has a keen interest in IT and keeps up to date with current and future IT developments. (Live and breathe it)
4. Has effective analytical and problem-solving skills.
5. Can plan and organise work using your own initiative.
6. Demonstrates evidence of good oral and written communication skills.

Whilst this is a temporary position until July 2025, there is potential for it to develop into an opportunity to join our Graduate Development scheme once you complete your University studies.
