Job summary

Her Majesty's Naval Base Clyde (HMNB Clyde) is home to the United Kingdom's Strategic Nuclear Deterrent, Astute Class Attack Submarines, Sandown Class Mine Hunter Vessels and 43 Commando Royal Marines.  It is an operational support and maintenance base within the Navy Command Top Level Budget (TLB) and comprises both Faslane and Coulport sites.  HMNB Clyde's primary purpose is to provide engineering and logistical support to the Royal Navy in maintaining the Continuous At Sea Deterrent (CASD).  This is achieved by ensuring at least one Vanguard Class submarine is on patrol at sea every day of the year.

Royal Naval Armament Depot Coulport (RNAD(C)) is responsible for the storage, processing, maintenance and issue of the Trident Weapon System and the ammunitioning of all submarine-embarked tactical weapons.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

The Alternative Crypto Custodian 3 will assist the Officer in Charge (OIC) RNDA in the running and maintenance of the Crypto Account held on behalf of Naval Base Commander Clyde at both Faslane and Coulport.  These duties will be carried out in accordance with the relevant Ministry of Defence policies.

Specific tasks for the role include:

  • Supply all Crypto requirements including electronic keys to the RNDA attached sub-accounts for the four Vanguard Class submarines and the Faslane Communications Centre (COMCEN);
  • Assist in managing all HMNB Clyde, HMS GANNET and RNAD Coulport departmental Crypto holders accounts for compliance and assurance checks;
  • Assist in an annual 100% muster of the full RNDA Crypto account;
  • Assist in the mandated external audit of the RNDA Crypto account conducted by Crypto Services to Defence (CSD) soon to be taken over by Fleet PSyA;
  • Manage the receipt and return of Crypto equipment no longer required and return it to the relevant MoD location;
  • Ensure the correct security procedures, regarding the safe handling of Protectively Marked (PM) publications and Defence Courier Mail are adhered to at all times and that the department meets all courier deadlines;
  • Act as nominated RNDA officer to provide out of hours cover as part of a duty roster within the RNDA.

Person specification

The successful candidate will be willing to attend role-specific training courses held at other Defence establishes within the UK which will necessitate short periods of detached duty.

Previous experience of working in an area where meticulous record keeping was essential will be highly desirable.

The successful candidate will be one of three Assistant Crypto Custodian roles within the RNDA working to the OIC RNDA.  The ability to team work, multi-task and work to defined or fast moving deadlines to support the output of the RNDA's tasking is key to this role.
